Obituary of Marjorie Garlow Singleton

Please share a memory of Marjorie Garlow to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marjorie Garlow Singleton, 92, of Hopecrest, passed away on August 28 after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Morgantown, Marjorie invested her energies and time in ways consistent with a deep affection for her family, friends and community. She earned an A.A. degree from Stephens College in 1940 and a B.A. from W.V.U. in 1942. That same year, she married Julius W. Singleton, Jr., enjoying her role as his loving and adored wife for 35 years until his death in 1977. She was an equally-loving and inspirational mother to their four daughters, the late Gretchen Singleton, and Rebecca, Sarah and Laura Singleton. Recipient of a 1994 Community Star Award, Marjorie pursued many volunteer activities that reflected a special interest in young people. She served as a Girl Scout Leader for 25 years, taught Sunday School at First Presbyterian and Rock Forge Presbyterian Churches, and served as an after-school tutor at Rock Forge Neighborhood House. After her husband's death, Marjorie became intent on bringing quality end-of-life care to Morgantown. She helped found the town's first Hospice, serving as president of its board for several years. She was also a founding director of the M.A.C. and a longtime member of the Friends of the Library board. For over 25 years, she volunteered as a driver for Meals-on-Wheels, serving as that organization's president for a year as well. She led exercise classes for seniors at the Rock Forge Neighborhood House, also teaching several of those seniors and other adults to swim for the first time. A service celebrating Marjorie's life will be held at Rock Forge Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 4 at 1:30 pm, followed by burial at East Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Marjorie's memory either to the Glenna Williams Community Center at Rock Forge Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1027, Dellslow, WV 26531 or to Hospice Care Corporation, P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520. Send condolences online at www.hastingsfuneralhome.com.
