Dr. George Alexander Curry, 94, of Morgantown, passed away guietly Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at his home. He was born in White Sulphur Springs on March 7, 1920, the son of the late Ernest Chalmers and Ida Mitt (Atkinson) Curry. Dr. Curry graduated with an Applied Baccalaureate Degree in 1942 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1943 from West Virginia University. In 1944 he went on to graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Medical Degree. Dr. Curry was on the West Virginia Medical Institute Board for 11 years and State Medical Council for 6 years. His great-great-grandfather Dr. Robert Curry was the first Surgeon General appointed by George Washington. He was an Eagle Scout, a past Elks Club member, and Rotary Club member. George was an avid golfer having been a member of the Pines Country Club for 32 years and a Lakeview member for 49 years. He won the State Medical Tournament three times; in addition, in 1978, he won the Medical Assistant Golf Tournament at Saint Andreas Golf Course in Chicago. He moved to his residence in Lakeview in 1963 where he stayed for the remainder of his lifetime. Dr. Curry is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Ethel "Tizzie" (DeBolt) Curry; children: Dr. George Alexander Curry II and his wife Elisa of Oklahoma City, Catherine Ann Samuel and her husband David of Morgantown, Carol Lynn Rushford and her husband Bradley of Morgantown, Christopher Debolt Curry and his wife Dianna of Huntington; grandchildren: Kimberly Jensen, Candice Curry, Annabel Jaminez, Jennifer McNally and her husband Timothy, Justin Rushford, Megan Rushford, Lauren Curry, and Mackenzie Curry; and great-grandchildren: Reese Alkire, Emma McNally, Jaxson McNally. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by seven siblings, Jane Roberts, Chalmers Curry, Cathline Kemper, Wilton Curry, Louis Alexander, David Curry, and Richard Curry. Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church, 456 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, until the 2 p.m. funeral service, with the Rev. James Morley officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Curry’s memory to the George and Ethel Curry Medical Scholarship at the WVU Foundation, the Foundation of Monongalia General Hospital, and/or the First Presbyterian Church.
