Obituary of Helen J. Heyl

Helen J. Heyl, 92, of Morgantown, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Sundale Nursing Home. She was born in Clarksburg, WV on April 15, 1923, the daughter of the late Letcher G. Humphrey and the late Bess (Mitchell) Humphrey. Helen graduated from Washington-Irving High School and attended Davis and Elkins Community College. She was a former employee of Gocke, Gocke, Gocke and Law in Clarksburg as a secretary. She also worked for several years at Reiner and Core Clothing Store. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Star City. She was a 25 year member of the Morgantown Women’s Club, a member of the Monongalia General Hospital Auxiliary for 25 years, American Cancer volunteer for the Reach to Recovery Program for 20 years, charter member of the Pines Country Club, a member of the Women’s Golf Association, and the Old Morgantown Golf and Country Club. Helen was proud to be the descendent of Walker Monroe and Hugh Garrett who settled in Harrison County in the 1800’s. She is survived by her two sons: Charles Allen Heyl of Richmond, VA, and Jack Thomas Heyl and wife Cynthia of Midlothian, VA; three grandchildren, Sara E. Jamshidian and her husband, Ram of New York City, Samantha K. Heyl of Virginia, and Charles R. Heyl of South Carolina; and one great-grandchild, Caspian Jamshidian. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Heyl in 1992, and her brother, Jack Humphrey. Friends will be received at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Star City on Monday, April 11 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the wake service at 7:30 PM to conclude visitation at the church, and on Tuesday, April 12 from 9 AM to 10 AM, the time of the Mass of Christian Burial, with Father Andrew Switzer as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Mason Cemetery, Clarksburg, WV. Donations may be made in Helen’s memory to the Trust Fund for the Poor, c/o St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 3334B University Avenue, Morgantown, WV 26505, or Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Morgantown, WV 26507.
