Cheryl Horton Heflin, age 71, of Morgantown, was welcomed into Heaven on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 surrounded by her family while under the care of the excellent staff at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born in Morgantown and was a proud resident of the Mountain State and descendent of Zackquill and Morgan Morgan, the founders of Morgantown. She attended Morgantown High School, where she was a Mohiganette and graduated in 1963. She then attended West Virginia University where she was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and later served as an alumni advisor for the chapter. Together with her husband, they established Heflin Insurance Agency in 1974 where she worked as an insurance executive until her retirement in 2006. She was a dedicated member of the Service League of Morgantown where she served as President and was a Girl Scout leader for 6 years. Cheryl loved reading, travel, and genealogy. Her home never knew a stranger. She was devoted to her family, friends and community and was always among the first to volunteer no matter how difficult or complicated the task. She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Ed of Morgantown; two daughters: Beth Cauvel of Shepherdstown and Erin (Tom) Quinlan of Pittsburgh; an “adopted” son, Morten (Mette) Fisker of Denmark; four grandchildren: Kate Cauvel, Megan Quinlan, Emily Quinlan and Benjamin Cauvel; a brother, Fred (Andy) Horton of Morgantown; a sister-in-law, Sue (Gary) Carpenter of Morgantown; a brother-in-law, Tom (Laurie) Heflin of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four nephews: Robert Horton of San Jose, California, Dean Horton of Morgantown, Scott Carpenter of Shepherdstown, and Isaac Heflin of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four nieces: Kelly Heflin Wilson of San Francisco, California and Maggie, Olivia and Katie Heflin of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a close cousin, LuAnn (Dave) Beresford of Jeanette, PA; as well as numerous cousins and friends. Her family was her life and she will be missed deeply. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Ann Horton and her son-in-law, Howard Cauvel. The family will receive friends at Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown on Sunday, October 23 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm and on Monday, October 24 from 10:00 – 11:00 am. Funeral services will be held at Hastings Funeral Home at 11:00 am Monday, October 24 with the Reverend Elizabeth Baker officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Service League of Morgantown for the benefit of the Stone House Preservation Fund, 313 Chestnut Street, Morgantown WV 26505.
