Please share a memory of Sandra Fleming to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sandy Yakim passed peacefully from this world on November 3rd, surrounded by the love of her daughter Erin and her sister Nancy, and the thoughts and prayers of those who knew her and loved her. Sandy was a bright light with a big smile, a big heart and an even bigger voice. She had a great passion for the many things in life that brought her joy: her family, her students and fellow teachers, working with her father in the Mountaineer Press Box, the Boston Red Sox, her red Mustang, Jamaica, tattoos, traveling and discussing Game of Thrones. Sandy was born, raised and lived her life in Morgantown as a loving single mother to her daughter Erin. The light of her life; as a vivacious and compassionate elementary school teacher for 36 years; and as an intrepid world traveler. Sandy lived her life on her own terms. She loved the Boston Red Sox and went to spring training in Florida 3 times with Erin, She loved Cape Cod and the summers spent working at Tim and Nancy’s gift store there. She was always planning her next tattoo and trip to Jamaica. Predeceased by her father, legendary WVU announcer Jack Fleming and her mother, genuine coal miner’s daughter Glenna Neely. Sandy is survived by her daughter, Erin Yakim; sister Nancy Fleming and Nancy's husband, Tim Sweeney; her niece, Molly Fleming; half-sisters Jenny Fleming Baxter and Courtney Fleming Brooks; uncles Ben Fleming and Jack Plunkett; aunt Delores O’Brien and many cousins. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St, Morgantown on Tuesday November 8th from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 6 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Randall Flanagan officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sandy’s memory to the Comfort Fund at WVU Cancer Institute Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 9300 Morgantown, WV 26506-9300.
