Obituary of Robert William Roth

Please share a memory of Robert William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert W. “Bob” Roth of Morgantown passed away on Dec. 7, 2016 at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born on April 13, 1926 in Preston County, and was the son of the late Lela and Paul Roth. Robert served in the 32nd Infantry of the U.S. Army in the Japanese theatre of WW II. Bob worked most of his adult life in the mining machinery industry. He was a shop foreman for many years with FMC, located in Fairmont, WV. The company constructed continuous boring machines that operated world-wide in coal, bauxite, copper and other valuable resources mining operations. Bob was a devoted family man and master craftsman. There was no construction or home improvement project that he could not handle. He was responsible for some 12 homes that were enjoyed by members of this extended family. In addition, Bob cultivated one of the most beautiful and bountiful gardens each spring and summer. He could be found most afternoons tending to his “Celebrity” and “Super Fantastic” tomato plants, as well as his super sweet bi-color corn. He canned most everything he grew each year. Everyone was envious of the touch he had with the plants in his garden. He did most of the cooking for family gatherings and holidays. His roasted turkey, dressing and gravy were legendary. He also had a unique way to prepare deviled eggs and cranberry sauce. He will be remembered fondly by all who graced his table for these dinners. Bob is survived by his wife of 73 years, Wanda Roth, and two children: Diana Antonini (husband Jim) and Jeannine Branch (husband Dallas). He is also survived by seven grandchildren: James Antonini (wife Jenny), Jeff Antonini, Chris Antonini (wife Patty), Mark Downs (wife Lisa), Michael Downs (Emma), Jamie Downs and Candice Sell; eleven great-grandchildren; as well as two sisters and one brother. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Roth, as well as four brothers and two sisters. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, Sunday, December 11th from 12 (Noon) until the time of the funeral service at 2 PM with Pastor Tim Halloran presiding. Burial will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the Foundation of Monongalia General Hospital, 1200 JD Anderson Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505.
