William H. Smyth, Sr., age 102 of Morgantown passed away on December 31st, 2016, at Golden Living Center. He was born March 26, 1914 in Westover, WV. He was the son of the late Harry Lee and Eva Waters Smyth. He was a WWII veteran serving as a Sergeant in the United States Army Signal Corp. in the China/Burma/India Theatre of Operations. He was a life member of VFW Post 548 and served for many years on the burial detail and held numerous offices at the post. He was a member of the Monongalia County Celebration of America Committee for many years and the Monongalia County Historical Society and the Auxiliary of Monongalia General Hospital. He worked at the old Morgantown Ordinance Works until its closing and retired from the West Virginia State Road Commission. He is survived by one son William H. Smyth, Jr. and wife Debbie of Morgantown; four granddaughters, Christine Riley (Herb), Eva Taylor (Ed Simmons), Kimberly White (Pete), and Amber Berry (Jason) all of Morgantown, step-grandchildren Lori and Chad Fetty; great-grandchildren, Dallas Riley, Rachael Bigelow (Micah), Nick Riley, Michael Bolden, Ashland Robertson, Dax Breeden, Joshua Taylor, Sierra Taylor and step-great-grandson Deshon Gibson; one great-great-granddaughter, Zayla Bigelow, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years Dorothy Margaret Smyth, his brothers, Paul, Howard and Robert; his sisters, Margaret Jamison, Mildred Areford and Louise Emerson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. The family would like to thank Golden Living Center Staff particularly the RN’s, LPN’s, CNA’s and Aides for the excellent care and treatment they gave Hugh the last few years of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown on Wednesday, January 4th from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday, January 5th from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kevin Cain officiating. Interment will follow in East Oak Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded at the cemetery.
