Carter Neill Stone

July 22, 1972 — June 3, 2023

Carter Neill Stone, 50, passed away peacefully to his reward in heaven in the presence of his immediate family at the Long-Term Acute Care Select Specialty Hospital on June 3, 2023, of natural causes after an illness of five months.

He was born July 22, 1972 in Morgantown. His parents are Ward D. (Jerry) Stone Jr. and Kathryn Houze Stone, who survive.

He grew up in Morgantown and attended First Presbyterian Church as an adolescent. He played Little League baseball for FNB when they won two city championships. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1990, where he played on the varsity golf team. He also attended Fairmont State University.

At the age of 20, Carter was struck down with schizophrenia. He accepted his illness and fought it courageously for the next thirty years. With the support of his family, Valley Health Care and Chestnut Ridge Hospitals, he had a good quality of life in spite of his illness.

Carter was an enthusiastic sports fan, and he loved the Mountaineers, Steelers and Pirates. In the early onset of his disease, he continued to attend Mountaineer games and a few Steeler and Pirate games. In the later years, he watched all their games on TV but still attended MHS Football and WVU and Black Bear baseball games. He also enjoyed going to Ty Brown's pony league baseball games and visiting with Ty's Grandfather, Coach Gale Catlett.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Kelly Belt and her husband Phil Belt and their three children, Benjamin, Abby and Jonathan, his uncle Judge Robert Stone, and his wife Susanne, Aunt Shelly Buckley (David), Uncle Greg Houze (Dawn) and Uncle Roger Houze, III. He is also survived by ten cousins.

The family would like to thank his treatment team at Chestnut Ridge Hospital, the group leaders at the program at Valley which he attended twice a week, and all the staff at Select Specialty Hospital where he spent his last 96 days. They cared for and loved him as one of their own. A special thanks to Dr. Mark Johnson of Mon Health who cared for Carter and guided his family though his final months.

There will be a visitation for family and friends at the First Presbyterian Church, 456 Spruce Street on Friday June 9th, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will continue Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Zac Morton officiating. Interment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the West Virginia Family Grief Center, 364 Patterson Drive # 309, Morgantown, WV 26505.
