Catherine Bertha Martin Smith

Catherine Martin Smith, 94, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Mapleshire Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center of Morgantown, WV. Catherine was born in Bluestone, WV on March 9, 1921, the daughter of the late Burkie Asbury Martin and the late Lillie Snow (Jefferson) Martin. She spent her youth in Mercer County, West Virginia and graduated from Bramwell High School in 1939. Catherine married Ernest Henry Smith on December 11, 1943. She readily settled into life as a mother and homemaker. They relocated to Morgantown, in 1957, where they remained until their last days. She enjoyed traveling, winters spent in Leesburg, FL, gardening, playing cards, cooking, antiquing, and time with her extended family. Catherine is survived by her son Ernest Smith (Maggie) of Huntsville, TX; her daughter, Paulette Metcalf of Morgantown; her son, Randy Smith (Carol) of Raleigh, NC; her brother, Roland Martin of Las Vegas, NV; her grandchildren: Ben Smith, Whitney Elliott (Marc), Kevin Metcalf (Natalie), and Justin Smith; and her great-grandchildren: Max and Joe Elliott, Jasmine, Jakob, Lily and Laken Metcalf. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ernest (February 3, 2012), and her siblings: Virginia, Norma, Millard, Raymond, Dennis, and Alfred. Friends and family will be received at Harner Chapel United Methodist Church, 100 Luckey Lane, Morgantown, Saturday, July 25, from 1:00 PM until the time of the Funeral Service at 2:00 PM with Pastor Lynda Masters officiating. Interment will follow in East Oak Grove Cemetery.
