Charles John Matala

September 8, 1951 — February 10, 2023

Charles John "Chuck" Matala, 71, of Morgantown passed away on February 10, 2023, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Chuck was born on September 8, 1951, in Johnstown, PA, the son of Cecelia "Sally" and the late John Matala.

Chuck was a caring husband, father, and grandfather who lived his life centered around his family and faith. He was a devout member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Star City.

As a kitchen and bath designer, Chuck had a passion for projects, which he often brought back to his home, having spent the last several years remodeling. Chuck was also an amazing woodworker who created beautiful signs, many of which can be found at businesses throughout Morgantown.

If Chuck wasn't inside working on his projects, you could find him outside enjoying nature or working in his garden. An avid hockey player and figure skater, Chuck also taught and played hockey around Morgantown for 40+ years. He was also passionate about biking and running, having completed over a dozen marathons.

Chuck will be remembered for his artistic abilities, delicious cheesecakes, and great sense of style and humor. Above all, friends, family, and members of his community and church will remember him as someone who would always go above and beyond to lend a helping hand.

In addition to his mother, Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Jennifer Sidow; daughter, Molly Matala and her husband James Schnatterly; son, Charles "Chip" Matala; grandchildren, Oliver and Patrick Schnatterly; siblings, Tami Barbaryka (Fred) and Chris Matala; siblings-in-law Liz Kurth (Lloyd), Ginny Sidow, Gretchen Weiser (Mark), Kevin Sidow (Nancy), and Meg Jordan; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, Chuck is preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Rob Sidow and John Jordan.

Friends and family will be received at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Ave, Morgantown on Tuesday, February 14, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, February 15, from 10:00 am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with Rev. Father John V. DiBacco as Celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Peace Gardens Mausoleum.
