Delbert Martin Bowers, Sr., 89, of Cheat Neck, Morgantown, died Monday evening, July 29, 2013. He was born June 25, 1924 in Cheat Neck, a son of the late Okey Johnston Bowers and the late Edna Myers Bowers Gatian. Survivors include his two children, Delbert Martin Bowers, II and his wife Pamela D. Bowers of Bruceton Mills, and Debra A. Bowers and her husband Douglas E. Lanham of Cheat Lake; two grandchildren, Delbert Martin Bowers, III and his fiancée Susan Wentworth of Clayton, NY, and Nathaniel Hough Bowers and his wife Karrie of Morgantown; a great-granddaughter, Nataleigh Rae Bowers; and two brothers, Coleman L. Bowers of Over Cheat, and Okey Bowers, Jr. of Bridgeport, WV. Additionally he is survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Alene Adams Bowers in 2008; a granddaughter, Leslie Rae Bowers, and two sisters-in-law Doris Hare Bowers and Hilda Smith Bowers. He was a 1942 graduate of University High School. He was a 50 year member of the Morgantown Union Lodge #4 and was a past Commander of the Morgantown Commandery #18. He was a lifelong member of the Zion Methodist and Cheat Lake United Methodist Church. He was a Sunday School teacher at both churches for over 50 years. He was a past member of the Morgantown Kiwanis Club. Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II on the LST747, where he was engaged in over 30 battles in the Pacific Theatre. He worked as a Public Accountant for more than 60 years serving the people of Monongalia County, and was a founding member of the Bowers and Scott Insurance Agency, and associated with the firm for more than 50 years. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown on Thursday, August 1st from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and again on Friday, August 2nd from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Reverend Michael J. Rowe and Reverend Krysta Rexrode Wolfe officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Cemetery, Over Cheat, where full military honors will be accorded at the graveside.
