Gemma Marie D'Agostino

Gemma Marie D'Agostino, 94, passed away at her home at The Heritage on August 2, 2024. Born in Cavadago, Italy, on August 8, 1929, she emigrated at a young age to the United States with her mother and five siblings, joining her father who was already working in the US. She is preceded in death by her parents, Oreste and Fausta Delsass Viola and an infant brother, as well as four other siblings, Rinaldo Viola, Mary Viola Rafus, Joseph Viola, and Elvio Viola. Her beloved husband of 69 years, Rick, also preceded her in death in May, 2022.

Gemma had a zest for life and loved to be around people. She bowled on several leagues for many years, participated in line dancing, played cards with friends, and enjoyed her weekly Mahjong games. Gemma also loved working in her gardens, planting her flowers, and decorating her home for every holiday. A fantastic cook, she loved having people over for parties. Her home was filled with family, friends, dogs, and lots of laughter.

Gemma also volunteered for many years at Monongalia General Hospital where she enjoyed her interactions with patients. She was also very involved with St. Francis de Sales Church, serving as both a Hospitality and Eucharistic Minister for many years.

Gemma is survived by her daughter, Cathy, of Chicago, Illinois; her granddog, Sydney Crosby, whom she adored; many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews throughout the country, and sister-in-law, Mildred Viola. Her niece, Beth (Viola) Lyons, was a great companion to her in her last years.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of The Heritage for their remarkable care and support of Gemma. She felt their Iove daily. Our thanks also to everyone at Amedisys Hospice for their compassion and professionalism.
