Janet Louise Smith

Janet Louise Bowers Smith, 81, of Morgantown, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021, at Mon Health Medical Center. She was born in Morgantown on February 9, 1940, daughter of the late Raymond and Myrl (Pancoast) Bowers. As a child, Janet attended Canyon Elementary School. She was one of the first to attend the new Cheat Lake Junior High School and went on to graduate from University High School in 1959. During the early 1960s, she traveled to her cousins in Baltimore and worked there at Montgomery Ward. Over the years, Janet was a cook for the Mon County Schools and factory worker at both Beaumont Glass and Davis & Lynch. She enjoyed spending time with her best friend/sister, Becky, who also helped take care of her. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and extended family and friends. She attended Canyon Presbyterian Church throughout the years. Her hobbies included going to yard sales, dumpster diving, playing spider solitaire, solving puzzles, and playing canasta. Janet is survived by children, Karla Simmons (Carolyn Tasker) and Lora Smith (Matthew Davich); grandchildren, Ashley Dalton (David), Abigail Dalton (JR), November Hershman, William Hershman (Erin), Thunder Smith (Sierra), Lena Dalton (Nathaniel), Nancy Simmons (Jakob), Jesse Simmons, Caylee Maxon and Lanee Maxon, eight great grandchildren and one on the way. She is also survived by siblings, Rebecca Deusenberry and Robert J. Bowers (Bonnie) and sisters-in-law, Jane Bowers and Janice Bowers. In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond Bowers, Sr., Donald Bowers, Richard Bowers; sisters, Ella Mae Bowers, Juanita Bowers, Lena Bowers; great grandchildren, Kenneth Pierce, Jr., Brayden and Kayden Sigley; nephews, Michael Adcox and Eddie Bowers; brothers-in-law, Ronald Deusenberry and Clyde Adcox; sisters-in-law, Jane Bowers and Thelma Bowers; and ex-husband who was the only man she ever loved, Kenneth Smith. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, from 3 – 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at Hastings Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at noon with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Janet's memory to Canyon Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, 18 Whipkey Lane, Morgantown, WV 26505.
