John Lavery

John D. âJackâ Lavery, 86, of Morgantown, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.Jack was born in Uniontown, Pa on August 19, 1924 the son of the late John V. and Helen Lavery.Jack served during World War II in the Marine Corp, 1st Marine Division, 22nd Battalion and fought at Guadacanal.He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a member of the Marine Corps League, Elks Club and former Exhaulted Ruler. A former Touch Down Club president, charter member of Pines Country Club and board member.Jack graduated from North Union High School in Uniontown, Pa. He worked for his brother-in-law at Dinsmore Tires and was the owner/operator of Bennett Oil Company.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma Jean Dinsmore Lavery, his children, Sheila Lavery Fleck and husband Charles of Lake Bluff, Illinois and John R. âJackâ Lavery and wife, Kim of Morgantown five grandchildren Amanda Stone and husband, Michael, Whitney Workman and husband Justin, Rebecca DeHart and husband, Kevin, Logan Fleck and Taylor Fleck two great grandchildren.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Lavery and a great grandchild.Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Tuesday, January 25 from 4-7pm. Visitation will continue Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 10-11am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Star City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. with Fr. John V. DiBacco as Celebrant. Interment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery. Monongalia County Detachment 342, Marine Corps League will provide military services at the cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made in Jackâs memory to WVU Children's Hospital, PO Box 8200, 1Medical Center Dr., Morgantown, WV 26505-8200 or to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 3344 University Avenue, Morgantown, WV 26505.
