Joseph May

Joseph Daniel May, 79, of Star City, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born in Star City on December 12, 1933, the son of the late Samuel May and the late Anna (Romano) May. Joe graduated from St. Francis High School in 1952. He retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways where he worked as a Bridge Inspector for more than 30 years. After this he went on to work for Loudoun County, Virginia Public School System for 10 years. He also owned and operated a dog grooming business. Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus Father Boulton Council 2954 of Morgantown, as well as a member of the Mountaineer Kennel Club for many years. He also participated in the Western Stars Square Dancing Club. He was an avid baseball fan, especially of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe was a proud lifelong member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, having served as an altar boy at the old St. Mary's Church as a young man, and serving as an usher for many years. He is survived by three daughters: Paula Fluharty and husband Lonnie of Morgantown; Kelly Mazzoni and husband Alan of Baltimore, MD; Donna Hill and husband Don of Wilmington, DE.; two beloved grandsons, Connor and Evan Fluharty; his brother, Samuel May Jr. of Philadelphia, PA; and his loving companion, Mary Ann Haney of Mapletown, PA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Patricia J. May; and four siblings: Agnes Barberic, Frances Engle, Louis Catherino, and John Catherino. Family and friends will be received on Sunday, November 17th from 3-5 PM and 7-9 PM at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, and again on Monday, November 18th from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM with Matt Lowe, minister of the Morgantown Church of Christ, officiating. Following this service, Joe will be moved to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Star City where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 PM with Father John V. DiBacco as celebrant. Interment will follow in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
