Louise Moats Gross

Louise Moats Gross, 91, of Morgantown, passed away early Monday morning, May 12, 2014 at Sundale Nursing Home of Morgantown. She was born in Vienna (Wood County), WV on March 13, 1923, a daughter of the late Francis Pierpont Moats, Jr. and the late Grace Virginia (Mondell) Moats Taylor Jenkins. Survivors include two children, Linda A. Johnson of Morgantown, and Jan Comfort and her husband Don of Anderson, SC; her sister-in-law, Irma “Boots” Shy of Barboursville, WV; her brother-in-law, Howard Gross of Reisterstown, MD; a nephew, John Jarrett of Saline, MI; three nieces Barbara Harries and her husband Daryl of Allentown, PA, Frances Chamberlin and her companion Barry Kessel of Allentown, PA, and Patty Saunders and her husband David of Nitro, WV, and her former son-in-law, Roy Johnson of Morgantown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Reverend Leonard Scott Gross, on March 1, 2013; a sister, Mary Neal Jarrett, a brother, Francis Pierpont Moats, III, and two uncles, Neal Moats and Ben Moats. Mrs. Gross was a graduate of Parkersburg High School, Class of 1939. For 16 years, she was employed by C&P Telephone Co. and Ohio Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of the Osher Life Long Learners (OLLI), and a former member of the Church Women United, Woman’s Club, and Western Stars Square Dance Club. Louise was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Order of the Daughters of the King. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Wednesday, May 14th from 5-8 PM. A Vigil Service will be held at 6 PM Wednesday evening in the funeral home. On Thursday, May 15th, Mrs. Gross will be moved to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 247 Willey St., Morgantown, where she will lay in repose from 12:30 PM until the celebration of the Funeral Mass at 1:30 PM with Father Mike Hadaway as celebrant. Following the funeral service, she will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Morgantown. Mrs. Gross’s casket will remain closed during the visitation at the church only.
