Madeline Velma Smith Benoit

Madeline Velma Benoit, 89, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 21, 2016, with family at her side. She was born in Masontown, WV on May 29, 1926, the daughter of the late Firl M. and Ressie Faye Smith. She met the love of her life, Robert Benoit, in Hartford, CT and they were married for over 65 years. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, playing cards but most of all she loved spending time with her family. She loved to volunteer; she was a founding member of Brookhaven Women’s Club, a group that raised money for needs in the community. She was a member of Brookhaven United Methodist Church. She is survived by daughters, Linda Gilbert of Suffield, CT, Kathy (Philip) Pompili of Morgantown and sons Kerry (Darlene) Benoit, Steve (Cyann) Benoit of Morgantown; grandchildren Jason (Jody) Pompili of Sanford, NC, Maria (Aaron) Cumpston of Morgantown, Erin Gilbert of Billerica, MA, Michael (Julia) Gilbert of Los Angeles, CA and Kristen (Brandon) Miles and 2 great granddaughters, Brooke and Madeline Miles of Morgantown. She is also survived by sisters, Vesta McVicker, Vada Davis, Arlyne (Lloyd) Menear, and Nancy Weaver as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Benoit; son, Larry Benoit; son-in-law, Jim Gilbert; sisters, Freda (Dale) Hall Fern (Willis) Bibeault; brothers, Clifford (Julia) Smith, Wilmer (Evelyn) Smith, Warren (Nina) Smith; brothers-in-law, Bill McVicker, Paul Davis, and Roy Weaver. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers that cared for her, especially Suszann, Katie, Stephanie, Wanda and Kristin that were with her until the end. They also have a heartfelt thanks to Amedysis Hospice of Morgantown for their loving care of their mother. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown on Thursday, February 25, from 2-4 and 6-8p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, Feb. 26th from 1p.m. until the time of the service at 2pm with Rev. Elizabeth Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Masontown Cemetery, Masontown, WV.
