Dr. Oscar Edmund Schubert, PhD., 90, of Morgantown, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2011. Oscar was born in Flushing, Ohio on August 10, 1921, the son of the late Paul Herman Schubert and the late Sidonie (Richter) Schubert. After Oscarâs birth, his family moved to WV. Oscar grew up in Wellsburg and was graduated from Wellsburg High School. He is survived by his children, Gary E. and wife Alice of Philippi, WV, Dr. Karel R. of Morgantown, WV, and Capt. Rudy P. and wife Kay of College Station, TX grandchildren, Bryan E. Schubert of Kandahar, Afghanistan, Rachel R. and husband Nate Coraor of State College, PA, Kristi K. Schubert of Cooperas Cove, TX, Lt. Paul E. Schubert, U.S. Air Force stationed in San Angelo, TX, Ryan F. Schubert of Philippi and Megan W. Schubert of Kansas City, MO and a great-granddaughter, Sofia Ryan Coraor and as well as many nephews and nieces. Oscar was a loving and loyal husband to his wife of 69 years, Phoebe, a kind, thoughtful, caring and generous father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and a wonderful mentor and teacher to his students, a creative scientist, mentor and colleague making significant contributions to the horticultural industry and economy of West Virginia and the surrounding region, and a award-winning photographer. He received a BS Degree in Agriculture in 1942 from West Virginia University, a Pre-Meteorology Certificate in 1944 from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, a Radar Maintenance Certificate in 1945 from the RCAF School in Ontario, Canada, a MS Degree in Floriculture in 1947 and a PhD. in Pomology in 1949 from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Dr. Schubert served as an Assistant in Horticulture at WVU in 1946, and a Research Assistant at the University of Illinois from 1946-1949. In 1949, he worked at University of Illinois in Research and Extension in Horticulture, and from 1949-1953 at WVU as an Assistant Professor in Horticulture. He was tenured and promoted at WVU to Associate Professor (1953-1961) and Full Professor in 1961. He retired from WVU in 1983 as Professor Emeritus. Dr. Schubert was a prolific scientist, publishing many scientific articles, bulletins and book chapters. He served with his brother Gilbert in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II in the Philippine Theatre where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. His scientific and honorary memberships and involvements were vast, including the Weed Society of America, the American Society for Horticultural Science, Northeastern Weed Control?Conference, West Virginia Academy of Science, Sigma Xi, Alpha Zeta, Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, New York Academy of Sciences, Phi Epsilon Phi, Phi Sigma, Delta Phi Alpha, West Virginia Horticulture Society, and the Illinois Horticultural Society.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Phoebe Cary Ryan Schubert a son, Dr. Leo G. Schubert sisters Irma F. Couch and Gisela D. Wurtzbacher and brothers Gehard G. Schubert and Gilbert H. Schubert. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Thursday, December 22nd from 11:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 PM with Reverend Tim W. Halloran officiating. Interment will follow at the Forks of Cheat Cemetery, Stewartstown Rd., Morgantown, where full military honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of Morgantown VFW Post 548 and WVANG Funeral Honors Detail of Camp Dawson, Kingwood.
