Robert Edmund Benoit

Robert Edmund Benoit, Jr., 86, of Brookhaven, passed away Friday, May 22, 2015 at his home. He was born June 10, 1928 in Hartford, CT, the son of the late Robert Edmund Benoit, Sr. and the late Elizabeth (Donovan) Benoit. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include his loving wife of more than 65 years, Madeline Velma Smith Benoit; four children, Linda Gilbert of Suffield, CT; and Kathy Pompili (Philip), Kerry Benoit (Darlene) and Steve Benoit (Cyann) all of Morgantown; five grandchildren, Jason (fiance’ Jody) of Sanford, NC, Maria Cumptson (Aaron) of Morgantown, Erin Gilbert of Billerica, MA, Michael Gilbert (Julia) of Los Angeles, CA and Kristen (Brandon) Miles of Morgantown; two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Madeline Miles; as well as several sisters and brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Larry Benoit; son-in-law Jim Gilbert; and his sisters, Doris Lowell, Barbara Parsons and Patricia Mowell. Mr. Benoit was a retired Rural Mail Carrier with the United States Post Office, and a veteran of the United States Navy. He was an avid bowler for more than 50 years, having bowled in several national tournaments. He was a fan of the WVU Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The family wishes to extend their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to all the compassionate caregivers throughout his illness. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505 on Tuesday, May 26th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, and again on Wednesday, May 27th from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Reverend Elizabeth Baker officiating. Interment will follow in the Masontown Cemetery.
