Sylvester Demetrious “Sy” Dinardi, 90, of Morgantown, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at his residence. Sylvester was born in Mt. Union, PA on June 29, 1924, a son of the late Antonio Demetrious and Victoria Dinardi . Survivors include his son, Peter David Dinardi, Sr. and his wife Rheba of Westover; a grandson, Peter David Dinardi, Jr. of Morgantown; a granddaughter, Keirstin Dinardi of Westover; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 65 years, Virginia Gentile Dinardi on April 7, 2012; and 14 brothers and sisters. Sy was a proud veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army, 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Europe. During combat, he was wounded twice and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Locally, he was a member of Morgantown VFW Post 548. After the war, he worked for the former Star City Glass until its closing in 1963 and then as a painter at the former Davis and Lynch Glass. H then became employed by West Virginia University where he retired as Chief Sign Painter after 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Star City, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights Of Columbus, 1193 Assembly, Father Boutlou of Morgantown. Sy volunteered countless hours at Christian Help and St. Ursula’s Food Pantry, and was a recipient of the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. He was an avid supporter of all WVU Mountaineer Sports and attended games on a very frequent basis. Friends will be received at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Star City on Wednesday, April 29th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and again on Thursday, April 30th from 10 AM until the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in the church with Father John V. DiBacco as celebrant. He will be entombed with his beloved wife at St. Mary’s Peace Garden Mausoleum. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7:30 PM Wednesday evening in the church to conclude the visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Dinardi’s memory may be made to either St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to St. Ursula’s Food Pantry, PO Box 18, Pursglove, WV 26545.
