Vivian Windel Spencer

Vivian Windel Spencer, 96, of Morgantown passed away peacefully on Friday, December 8, 2023. She was born April 7, 1927 in Morgantown, daughter of the late Mildred and Horace Windel.


Following her 1944 graduation from Morgantown High School, she went to Morgantown Business College, worked for Monongahela Power Company from 1946-1956, and for the Federal Government from 1957-1976. She was a longtime member of Spruce Street United Methodist Church, taking her vows on March 30, 1940, and served as a youth counselor and choir director in the early 1950s. In 1952, she was the first president of the newly organized Wesleyan Service Guild and later held 2 terms as President of the United Methodist Women. She was a lifetime member of the Scott's Run Settlement House Auxiliary, serving as treasurer.


For 18 years, Vivian and her husband, Jim, delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Scott's Run Settlement House as well as the American Red Cross. She also continued to help with the Scott's Run Backpack Program.


She was known for her love of sports, her bridge club, OFF (Out for Fun) club, and her church family, and the love she gave to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert James (Jimmy) Spencer, and her sister, Mary Jane Windel.


Mrs. Spencer is survived by her children Nancy Nunley and David Spencer, both of Morgantown, grandchildren Sarah (Eric) Kendall, of Parkersburg, WV, and Rebecca (Collyn) Kelley of Kailua, Hawaii, and great-grandchildren Madison and Lillian Kendall, both of Parkersburg, WV.


The family would like to thank West Virginia Caring and Assisted Living at Evergreen for their care of Mrs. Spencer.


A private family service will be held on Saturday, December 16th at Lawnwood Cemetery with Rev. Eric Kendall officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Scott's Run Settlement House, the Meals on Wheels program, or West Virginia Caring.
