William A. (Bill) Harold, 94, lost his battle with lung cancer at the home of his daughter in Ellicott City, MD on Wednesday, December 23rd. Son of the late William Roy and Ida Alberta Lawson Harold, he was born December 3, 1921 in Clarksburg, WV, lived in Walkersville and graduated from Walkersville High. He was married 62 years to the former Wanda McCartney DeVault. A WWII vet, Bill joined the Navy in 1943 and served on the Aircraft Carrier Ranger. After the war, he came to live with his Aunt Emma Lawson Powell on Powell Ave. in Morgantown. He worked at Morgantown Hardware, Haines and Haines Plumbing, and the Sterling Faucet Co., where he met his wife, Wanda. He worked for the Chico Dairy Co. for 30 years delivering milk first, but he is most remembered for delivering Chico Ice Cream throughout the tri-state area, retiring in 1988. Bill and Wanda lived independently in their Powell Ave. home until this past October. He was quick with humorous replies, stories and jokes and he had a great crooning voice, remembering all the words to songs from the 1930’s and ‘40’s. He was a lifetime member of the Westover VFW Post #9916. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, AnnaBelle Harold Walker of Irving, California, and grandson, Douglas A. Smith of Maryland. Surviving are his wife Wanda, children Janice DeVault (Richard) Tylka of Raleigh, NC, Jacqueline DeVault Smith (Raymond )Falker of Ellicott City, MD, and Richard (Jean Martin) DeVault of Celina, OH, seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two nieces, a nephew and their children in CA, and many cousins. Friends and family will be received at the Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Sunday, January 3rd from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday, January 4th from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover. Full military funeral rites will be performed at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, 7829 National Pike E # 2, Uniontown, PA 15401 or the American Cancer Society, 122 S. High St., Morgantown, WV 26501.
