Winfield Scott Morgan, Iii, Md

Winfield Scott Morgan, III, M.D., was born on January 9, 1921 in Takoma Park, MD, and grew up in Plymouth, PA. He passed away Friday evening, October 10, 2014 at his residence in Morgantown, WV. The country was on a war footing when he matriculated at Albright College in 1939. He therefore graduated early and entered Temple Medical School from which he graduated in 1945. Dr. Morgan interned at Robert Packer Hospital and was a fellow at the Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, PA. He was called into the army in 1946 and served as Chief of Laboratory Services and Officer in Charge of Medical Education at the Station Hospital at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC. Dr. Morgan began his residency in Pathology in 1948 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, and remained on staff there for the next 11 years during which time he was a member of the faculty of Harvard Medical School. In 1951, he received an American Cancer Society/British Empire Cancer Campaign Fellowship for research in biochemistry at Oxford University, England. In 1958, he received a Special Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health for biochemical research at the Wenner-Gren Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1962, he was appointed Professor of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Director of Pathology at Metropolitan General Hospital in Cleveland, OH. During this time he served as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health and was a member of the editorial board of the journal “Experimental and Molecular Pathology.” From 1967 to 1974, he served as Director of Laboratories at Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH. In 1974, he came to West Virginia University School of Medicine as Professor of Pathology and Director of Surgical Pathology, positions he held for the next 19 years. In 1989, he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Pathology, a position he held until 1994. He retired in 1996. On November 7, 2014, at 11 am, Dr. Morgan will be buried with military honors at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, next to his wife of 56 years, Catherine, who was buried there in 2005. Dr. and Mrs. Morgan are survived by their five children, Deborah (Richard McCarthy), Kenneth, Lyndon (Cathy), Janet, and Robert (Julia Patterson), and eight much cherished grandchildren. Dr. Morgan is also survived by a sister, Beverly Barton, a brother, Judge Warren G. Morgan (retired), and nine nieces and nephews. In addition to his dedication to family and medical research, Dr. Morgan had a love of neglected farms, honey bees, and gardening.
