LaYvonne McCoy "Bonnie" Cagey, 92, formerly of rotary Street, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Evergreen Assisted Living.LaYvonne "Bonnie" was born in Smithfield, PA on August 21, 1919, the daughter of the late David and Lulu (Strickler) McCoy.She was a 1937 graduate of Fairchance-Georges High School and a 1941 graduate of West Virginia University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. While a student, she played the violin in the University Orchestra and led her sorority in the Motherâs Day Sing, for which they won first prize. After her marriage to Robert S. Cagey, they made their home in Westover, moving to Suncrest in 1955 where she continued to reside on Rotary Street until 2003. Bonnieâs focus was on her family, homemaking and volunteering and she was an active supporter of her daughtersâ interests and activities, especially the Suncrest and MHS Band Auxiliaries. She was a devoted wife to Bob and they enjoyed time boating and in the company of family and friends at their cabin on Cheat Lake. Bonnie spent a number of years as caregiver to her Mom, and to her husband and sister during their illnesses. A longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Julia Bonafield Circle, Bonnie was also a amber of the WVU Emeritus Club, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Order of the Rose, Morgantown Service League, Sundale Womenâs Guild, and the Order of the Eastern Star, generously giving of her time in various capacities. Bonnie volunteered for many years to a number of charities including the Scotts Run Settlement House and the Well Baby Clinic, and was a described as instrumental in changing the location of the clinic from the Labor Temple to the Salvation Army in 1966.Throughout her life, she enjoyed wildflowers, feeding the birds, and working in her yard and was frequently seen trimming hedges and riding on her lawnmower. She also cheerfully cared for a variety of pets through the years including her own cat, Whiskas. Bonnie learned to water ski at 50 and remained active through her later years. Friends would comment on having seen her on the roof cleaning gutters in her 70âs, joyriding in her convertible with her 90 year old mother or bike riding with her grandchildren. To celebrate her 80th birthday, she took to the Rail Trail with her family and completed the 11 mile ride from Masontown to Morgantown on a three wheeled bike. She accepted her diagnosis of Alzheimerâs with courage and grace, deciding to make a new home at Heritage Point in 2003. In 2005, as her needs changed, she relocated to Assisted Living at Evergreen where she enjoyed the company of a loving community of friends, many from her days in Suncrest. Her family would like to thank her caregivers and staff at both facilities for all their kindness and for making her at home. A special thanks to Amedysis Hospice, especially Renee and Ron, as well as her Physician, Dr. Charlene Horan, for all their guidance and compassion. The family would also like to express special appreciation to her personal caregivers, Amy, Carole Ann, Bonnie, and others who helped along the way, and especially to Patty, her special caregiver and friend of over 6 years, whose loving care kept Mom healthy, smiling and cheering on the Mountaineers. We mourn her passing and celebrate her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert S. Cagey in 1967, a beloved daughter Carol L. Cagey in 1962, her dear sister Melrose M. Coldren in 1966, her son-in-law Gregory V. Adams in 1997, and her granddaughter Connieâs husband, William Horne, in 2010.
