Obituary of Donald Edward West

Donald Edward West, 70, of Morgantown, WV, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 at J. W. Ruby Memorial Hospital after a 3 year courageous battle with cancer.

Don was born in Morgantown, June 14, 1947, the son of the late John and Frances West. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Collins.

Don was a graduate of Morgantown High School and WVU with a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.  He retired from the WV Department of Rehabilitation Services where several of his clients received awards. He was a former member of the WV Army National Guard and the Knights of Columbus. He was a board member of Pace Tech and was on the Ward and Boundary Commission of Morgantown. He attended St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.  He was an active member of the reunion committee for the MHS class of 1965.

Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening (always sharing his bountiful tomatoes), MHS football and basketball. He enjoyed watching the Antique Roadhouse Show and old western movies, especially John Wayne movies. He loved spending time with his 5 grandchildren: taking them fishing, riding with him on the riding mower, hiding Easter Eggs, taking his oldest grandson to MHS football and basketball games, and so much more.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Deborah Liberatore West;  2 Daughters, Michele West Brumbaugh (Kurt) and grandchildren, Connor, Kayla, and Anthony, and Alicia West Fancher (Jim) and grandchildren, Zachary and Gianna; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Leia Liberatore and nieces and nephews, Noah, Christian (Sarah), Sara, and Anna Liberatore of Colorado: nieces and nephews, Karen Collins, Keith Collins (Xiomara), Kristen Vincent, and Kelli Hoskins.  He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Per Don’s request, cremation has been honored by his family and provided by Hastings Funeral Home.  Friends and family will be received at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, on Thursday, February 22nd from 4-8 PM.  A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at the church on Thursday at 7:30 PM to conclude the evening visitation.  Visiting time with the family will continue at the church on Friday, February 23rd from 9 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM with Rev. Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati, STD, VE as celebrant.  Inurnment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
