Last week I received an email of Cameron's passing. Although I hadn't seen Cameron since he left Tech I was stunned by this. Cameron and I go back quite a way in our respective careers. And although we lost contact he was always in my mind a dear friend and colleague. At this time please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.Howard

From everyone at Uncle Bunk's, we would like to express our deepest sympathies for your loss. Dr. Hackney was a wonderful man who ran the acidified foods training with such wit, insight, and entertaining food science stories that the class was not at all tedious for us! We worked with him to get our products approved for sale many years ago and have turned to him countless times since then. He was a tremendous resource for those in the food industry in West Virginia. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Debbie, Lauren and Hackney families, My heart is simply broken over the passing of Dr. Hackney. As a former student, I recall how he beamed when he spoke of you. To say that touched many lives trivializes the amount of good that he did. Not only did he have a brilliant mind, but he also had a compassionate and caring soul. Today our hearts hurt, but the angels are rejoicing. May God comfort you now and always. ~Sincerely, Debbie Hurley Bell

Debbie, Lauren, and family,I'm deeply sorry for your sudden loss. It's still hard to believe that those calls from my best friend have stopped. We talked nearly every week, some weeks several times. I should never have taken them for granted. I loved Cameron. He was truly unique and the most loyal friend anyone could ever have. Years ago he lobbied hard for a professional award to be given to me. I didn't get it then but finally received it 6 hours before he passed away. I was looking forward to telling him but, of course, didn't get the chance. Cameron was exceptionally insightful, truly brilliant at times, and most of all fair. As an administrator, if he saw injustice, say a double standard that favored senior faculty over staff, he worked tirelessly to correct it. He was not concerned for himself, his motivations were simply to do what was right. For these things and so much more, I love him and miss him. My condolences and best wishes to you all.Tom Rippen

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Hackney's passing. I was in his food micro class at Virginia Teach in the early 90's. He had such a great personality and truly turned us all on to food science. Though I haven't seen him in years, I look back with fondness on all my memories of him in class, FST picnics, and just hanging out at the FST building. I pray for God's comfort for your family.

Dear Debbie and Lauren, I am so sorry for your loss. I understand your shock, having been through a similar situation myself, and I share your grief. Cameron was a wonderful mentor to me when I started at VT. He was so compassionate, caring, and generous. He spoke of you both very frequently, with deep love and recognition of your importance in his life. Although I did not have as much contact with him over the past several years, I always knew that he would be there for me at any moment of need. I am sure he is in Heaven with my husband, Bob, and they are glorifying God together, rejoicing in His glory and requesting that peace and comfort will be on all of us here below. May your grief be tempered by the image of Cameron's joy in the most perfect place. With much love, Sue Duncan

Debbie and Lauren,It is so very difficult to express in words my sorrow for your loss. Like so many others, Cameron touched our family's life profoundly. He was a great mentor and friend to both Joe and I. Very few individuals in my adult life have had such an affect on both my personal and professional life. Such a wonderfully silly, caring and intelligent human being rarely graces this earth. I am privileged to have had him in my life.

Dear Debbie:Cookie and I were stunned when we heard the news of Cameron's passing. The emptiness left by his death will be with us for a very long time.Cameron was a dear colleague and cherished friend. He did much to advance the Davis College, indeed, his eleven years of leadership were exemplary in many ways. One of the traits that I most enjoyed about Cameron was his ability to reconcile difficult and often conflicting situations. Given that our Colleges both housed design units, situations arose, but we always were able to sit down together and work through whatever issues were before us. I remain most grateful for his openness and resolve.Cameron and I shared many experiences, and I shall truly miss him. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.Bernie

Debbie and Lauren I want to express my sorrow for your lose. Cameron was the person who saved my career at Virginia Tech. The best measure of an effective leader is someone who made a difference-and he certainly did. In the rather impersonal university atmosphere he was a true standout-an honest, caring, and fun individual. He will truely be missed by a countless number of people who's lives were enriched by knowing him. Bruce Zoecklein

Debbie and Lauren, I am so very sorry for your loss. Ray and I became friends as freshmen at the Towers Dorm. We, and lots of other friends, shared rides between Morgantown and Charleston many times freshman year. Those rides were filled with much laughter. Many years later, we reconnected via the internet and caught up on each other's lives. We laughed about being successful grownups on the outside, but still feeling like silly kids on the inside. He was so proud of you, Lauren, and Debbie, you were truly the love of his life. I'm glad we reconnected, but oh-so-sad that he is gone. The world will miss his wit, humor, and innate kindness. You are in my heart and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Hackney's passing. I met him as a masters student in speech therapy in 2009, and he graciously helped me with some of my research. He again helped me a few months ago with my doctoral research when I traveled to WVU from the University of South Carolina. Even in the few short visits I had with him I learned so much about him and about what he has done for WV and WVU. He was a truly wonderful man. I'm sorry for your loss.
