Martha Lewis Manning, 101, of Morgantown passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. Martha was born November 14, 1910 in Morgantown, daughter of Arthur and Lizette Lewis.She graduated from Morgantown High School and earned a degree in music from West Virginia University. After a career as pianist and teacher, Martha turned her attention to stained glass windows. With a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Foundation, she travelled widely to locate and photograph windows made with West Virginia glass. She published articles in Goldenseal and gave many slide lectures around the state. A member of the Monongalia Historical Society, she was also on the Morgantown Historic Landmarks Commission and led downtown walking tours of historic Morgantown. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was pre-deceased in 1983 by husband Dr. Warren Francis Manning, Professor of Romance Languages at WVU. The couple is survived by four daughters: Catherine (and Dr. John) Crotty of Morgantown Dr. Dorothy Manning of Boston, MA Alice (and Dr. Leo) LaSota of College Park, MD and Dr. Lucy Manning of Norfolk, VA and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces Mildred Hilling and Frances Hilling of Morgantown.Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown on Friday, May 4 from 4-6pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday, May 5 from 12 (Noon) until the time of the funeral service at 1pm with the Rev. Dr. Kirk B. Haas officiating. Interment will take place at Beverly Hills Memorial Garden.The family expresses special appreciation for the staff and friends at The Village at Heritage Point.
