George Phillip Uphold, 81, of Dug Hill Rd., Morgantown, passed away Monday, October 3, 2011, at Monongalia General Hospital.George was born in Morgantown, on September 12, 1930, the son of the late Henry âHuskyâ and Rosa Mae Kisner Uphold. He was a 1948 graduate of Morgantown High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Sabraton Baptist Church. George started his career with the West Virginia Office of Employment Security as a file clerk in 1958 and worked his way up to area supervisor when he retired in 1988. Throughout that time, he had coordinated ten unemployment compensation offices in the northern half of the state. In 1971, he established the first Veterans Task Force Office in the state in the city of Morgantown. After his retirement, he found great enjoyment with woodworking projects. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Hoskins Uphold, a son, Randall Uphold of Morgantown, a grandson, Shawn Uphold and wife, Tracy Blosser Uphold of Morgantown, great-grandchildren, Kelsi and Kira Uphold. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Uphold in 2009, his sisters, Ruth Casteel and Evelyn Thomas, his brothers, Ronald, Joseph, Carl and Edward, and one brother, in infancy. Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 2-4pm & 6-8pm on Wednesday, October 5, and again from 10am until the time of the 11am funeral service on Thursday, October 6, with Pastor Scott Whetzel officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hills Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite with members of VFW Post 548 and WVANG Military Funeral Honors Group, Camp Dawson, Kingwood, WV.
