Lucille Reed Davis, longtime resident of Grand Street in Morgantown passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, after a long illness.She was the eldest daughter of Mr. James Ottis Reed and Josie Hawkins Reed of Fairmont and reared in Fairmont, West Virginia.She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fairmont State College where she served as the first woman student body president after serving as vice president her junior year. She pursued graduate studies at both WVU and the University of Pittsburgh. Lucille was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Gamma Chi Chi Sorority, Marques & Alpha Phi Omega (president), and Kappa Delta Pi (President).Lucille was one of the first East Fairmont High School Honey Bees, and a Fairmont State College band majorette. She placed second in the Neeley Oratorical Contest at Fairmont State and was twice recognized in Whoâs Who among Students in American Universities and colleges.Lucille taught secondary school from 1945 to 1954 in Marion County, WV Baltimore, MD and Memphis, TN. She and her husband moved to Morgantown in 1954 where she was a highly active member of the First Christian Church, South Park Neighborhood Book Club, WV State Optometric Auxiliary (first vice-president) and Tri-County Optometric Auxiliary (president).She is survived by her daughter Suzanne and spouse Major Charles W. Harvey III, USMC (Ret.) of Woodbridge, VA.In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jay Charles Davis, Jr., son, Charles Reed Davis, and her sister Betty Reed Wysner.Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, on Sunday, July 31 from 1-4 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, August 1 from 9-10 a.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Rick Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Fairmont.In lieu of flowers, donations in Lucilleâs memory may be made to the First Christian Church, 100 Cobun Avenue, Morgantown, WV 26501 or to the Fairmont State University Drama Department, c/o School of Fine Arts, please make checks payable to FSU Foundation Inc., 1201 Locust Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554.
