Morton E. VanVoorhis, 87, of Morgantown, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 with his wife and two sons by his side. Morton was born in Morgantown on November 24, 1923, the son of the late Isaac and Allene VanVoorhis. In the US Army Infantry during WWII he was wounded in Germany and received the Purple Heart. He also received the Bronze Star for Heroic and Meritorious service and the Selective Service Medal for Faithful and Loyal Service. Morton graduated from West Virginia University in 1949, with a degree in business, 3 days before his wedding to Joan. After working in the VanVoorhis Family business he worked for the Morgantown Water Commission and then on to become a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of WV. Mort was on the Morgantown Golf and Country Club board of directors as treasurer. He was an avid and skilled golfer, little league baseball coach, and lifelong follower and supporter of Morgantown High School and West Virginia University athletics. He was a 50+ year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morgantown. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Joan Parsons VanVoorhis, his sons Rusty VanVoorhis and wife Trudy of Tryon, NC, Lindsay VanVoorhis and wife Gail of Morgantown, and his two granddaughters Erin VanVoorhis of Vienna, VA and Adrienne VanVoorhis of Morgantown.Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his only brother Ike VanVoorhis. Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown from 1-4p.m. on Sunday January 16, and from 10-11a.m. on Monday, January 17. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 11a.m. with Rev. Junius L. Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Taylortown, PA.
