Thelma Shreve Fortney, 97, of St. Clair's Mobile Home Village, Morgantown, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Monongalia General Hospital.Thelma was born in Pendleton Co. on December 30, 1912, a daughter of the late Alvin Vernon Shreve and the late Cleda (Bowers) Shreve.Survivors include her daughter, Nancy F. Turner and husband Peter of Morgantown three grandchildren, Christopher L. Pigott and Rita L. Church both of Morgantown, and Toni Diane Salerno Williams of Clarksburg five great-grandchildren, Amber Dawn Pigott, Marcus David Slauer, Molly Ryan Slauer, Aubrie Rose Williams and Aliza Grace Williams one great-great-grandson and one sister, Imogene Alt of Baltimore, MD. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James L. ""Jack"" Fortney in 1985 one daughter, Jane Salerno one grandson, Michael Anthony Salerno one sister, Ressa Jane Alt and one brother, Alvin Bowers Shreve. Mrs. Fortney was a graduate of Franklin High School and Davis & Elkins College where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 60 years in a career that spanned as a nurse for Dr. Russell Coffindaffer of Shinnston, WV, the Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Clarksburg and finally at Walter Reed Medical Center where she retired. She was a 50 year member of the Shinnston Chapter 103 Order of the Eastern Star and as a result of a merger, became a lifetime member of the Queen Esther Chapter 11 Order of the Easter Star of Clarksburg. She loved sewing, playing cards and games, working crossword puzzles, gardening, canning, cooking and baking. She was also a fan of football and followed the WVU Mountaineers every season.Mrs. Fortney's wishes for cremation have been honored by her family.A graveside committal service will be on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 11 AM in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston, W, with Reverend Craig L. Falkenstein officiating.Hastings Funeral Home of Morgantown is in charge of the arrangements.
