He was a great influence in my life, affirming that I could do whatever I set my mind to. We became closer friends after his retirement in 1980 and remained as such right up until he passed. I do think of him quite often, and miss him greatly.

Clyde was a true mentor to me. Aside from his brilliant playing, and dry sense of humor, I remember his frequent question, "Why do you play it that way?"Sadly, Clyde and my father died within 24 hours. I have been inspired by both.

Dr. English was my organ teacher back in the '60s when I was working on my MM in Church Music and Organ. What a sympathetic, generous person he was, and a fine teacher. And I loved his classes in church-music history, including the visits to Pittsburgh. He was a true joy.

"We''ve got some work to do" Dr English told me at my organ audition in 1971. He, along with Scott Stringham, influenced me and set my life''s course as a church musician. Our organ class in the early-mid ''70s became a family with Dr English as the head. Sometimes a wordless look over the top of those dark-rimmed glasses was all it took to set us straight. He taught us to be musicians, yes--but he showed us life could include both fun and discipline. (I have great memories of trips to Pittsburgh and Washington DC). Near the end of my bachelor degree time with him, he gave me a piece of music inscribed "To Tom--a fine organist." He had led by example and I had worked hard.

My deep condolences to Clyde's family. I am honored to have been his colleague. All the local organists appreciated his support, and many of us benefited greatly from his wisdom and knowledge. He touched his students, his church, and WVU in ways we cannot measure.

Clyde was a wonderful friend, teacher, and mentor. He was one of the persons who believed in me and taught me to believe in myself. You never forget those people. I will miss my visits with him terribly.Above all Clyde was a giving man and an inspiration to all of us who knew him. He lived his long life fully.
