Mary Elizabeth âBettyâ Lang, 90, of Ellicott City, MD, formerly of Morgantown, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010, at Seasons Hospice of Northwest Hospital of Randallstown, MD.Betty was born in Morgantown on March 3, 1920, the daughter of the late Frederick Albert and Edna Marquis Lang.She was a graduate of Morgantown High School. She graduated from WVU in 1941 with a B.S. in Physical Education and obtained her M.S. in Physical Education in 1942. Betty taught at Ellicott City High School and Howard High School. She retired in 1976 after 35 years teaching and was awarded the Governorâs Citation in appreciation of her years of service to MD. She was the first female PE teacher/coach in Howard County, MD. From 1968-1972, Howard Highâs field hockey team went undefeated in 63 consecutive games under Coach Betty Lang. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Lambda Chapter), the Womenâs Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Howard High School Athletic Hall of Fame.Betty lived in Ellicott City, MD, with dear friends Eleanor Dries and Wilhelmina Oldfield. She liked traveling, needlepoint, reading and visiting with family and friends. It was common to encounter former students when on outings she was recognized and remembered fondly from her former coaching days. She is survived by sister-in-law Edna Cope nieces and nephews James W. Lang, Nancy Lang Brittell, Fred W. Lang, Jr., Robert Lang, Virginia Lang Rowan, Carolyn Kuhn Hamilton, Russell Kuhn III, Edna Eugenia Cope, Edwin Cope, Jr. 18 grandnieces and nephews as well as many great grandnieces and nephews. Betty was lovingly cared for in the end by grandniece Audra and Westley Cox and nephews Russell Kuhn III and Edwin Cope, Jr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Edwin Marquis Cope, Virginia Nelle Lang Kuhn, Frederick W. Lang, Sr. niece Elizabeth Marquis Lang Bock grandniece Cynthia Kay Lang Stephens. The family would like to thank Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital, Randallstown, MD, for their exceptional care. Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 6-8PM on Thursday, May 20, and from 10-11AM on Friday, May 21. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11AM on Friday with Rev. Kris Haig officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Morgantown.
