Obituary of Elizabeth Shuman

Elizabeth âBetteâ Shuman, 91, died April 19, 2010, at her residence. The daughter of William H. Lake and Alberta Sanders Lake, she was born October 15, 1918 in Follansbee, WV and attended college at West Virginia University and Ashland College in Ohio.Her husband, Attorney Robert L. Shuman, preceded her in death in 1996. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her parents two brothers, Jack Lake of St. Petersburg, FL and Sandy Lake of Pompano, FL and two sisters, Doris Jones of Follansbee, WV and Hazel Standish of Ambridge, PA.Bette is survived by two sons, Stephen K. Shuman and wife Cindy, and Philip B. Shuman and wife Sherry all of Morgantown two daughters, Roberta A. Mitchell of Columbus, OH and Elizabeth (Betsy) Parker and companion Robert White of Chillicothe, OH and one sister, Mary Margaret Bowles and husband, Ben of Mansfield, OH. Betteâs remaining family includes four grandsons, Stephen B. Shamblin, Robert L. Shuman and wife Victoria, and Michael S. Shuman, all of Morgantown, and Nicholas B. Shuman of New York, NY. She also leaves two granddaughters, Heather E. Hudson and husband Jason of Columbus, OH, and Brooke D. Shuman of Morgantown. Bette will also be missed by six great-grandchildren.During her lifetime, Bette was committed to her community, devoting time and resources to the WVU Law School, Wesley United Methodist Church, the Monongalia General Hospital, the Service League, The Old Stone House, the Mountaineer Area Boy Scouts Council, the Scotts Run Settlement House, the Morgantown Public Library and the Morgantown Theatre Company. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, gardening, canning, quilting, crocheting, traveling, and playing Bridge.Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown on Wednesday, April 21st from 4-8 PM. Visitation will continue at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Morgantown on Thursday, April 22nd from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Reverend Michael Atkinson officiating. Interment will follow in the Lawnwood Cemetery, Morgantown.
