Grace S. Chipps, 98, of Elysian Ave., Morgantown, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 20, 2010 with her son, daughter-in-law and her caregiver at her side. She was born in Stumptown, Calhoun County, WV on September 24, 1911, the daughter of the late Leon G. and Dessel McCartney Stump.She was a 50 year member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Womanâs Society of the Wesley United Methodist Church, a member of the Durbannah Garden Club Morgantown and Monongalia Senior Citizens, Inc. and the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees. She was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts in the past.Her first job after graduation from the Morgantown Business College in 1930 was cashier in the dining room at the Hotel Morgan and secretary to the manager for 4 ½ years. From there she went to Montgomery Ward and Company for six years where she held the position as cashier first then office manager. For the next 18 years, she stayed at home to raise her son. In 1974 she retired from the Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University where she held the position of Secretary to the Assistant Dean of Music, Art and Drama after 14 years of service.She is survived by a son and wife, Norman K. and Emily Burgess Connelly Chipps ofWickenburg, AZ one grandson, Keith M.(Nancy) Chipps of Georgia, two granddaughters, Carla (David) LeCain of Perryhall, MD, Susan (Michael) Pfeil of Baltimore, MD, one brother-in-law, Walter Snyder of Mt. Morris, PA, and one step grandson, Nile (Michele) Burgess of Glen Burnie Maryland, 7 great- grandchildren and 4- step great- grandchildren. Her surviving nieces and nephews are Walter L. (Sherry) Snyder of Charleston, Linda (Earl) Stewart of Mt. Morris, PA, Nancy Joe Walker and Ken Smyth of Mesa, AZ, Donald Ayersman, Deborah (Bruce) Felton, Kimberly (Brad) Calandrelli, Robert (Nancy) Bollinger, all of Morgantown, & many other nieces and nephews of the Chipps and Stump family.She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Aaron R. Chipps who passed away on March 2, 1992, her mother and father, Dessel and Leon Stump, four sisters, Hallie and husband Charles Smyth, Leone Snyder, Edith and husband Joseph Bollinger, and Ethel and husband Donald Ayersman. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown from 3-5 & 7-9pm on Friday, February 26, and again from 10-11am on Saturday, February 27. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11am with Rev. Michael Atkinson officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or Wesley United Methodist Womanâs Society, 503 N.
