I am a big Fred Schaus fan from his playing days for the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons in the late 1940's & early 1950's. I saw him play on several occasions and listened to many Pistons games on the radio (Hilliard Gates) as a youngster. He wore number 8 on his Pistons uniform which I quickly identified with since my Birthday is on March 8. I have a sizable collection of Pistons basketball photo's and programs, etc., from those days with Fred's picture appearing on several. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.

Coach Schaus has touched my life through his son John. John has been a friend, a colleague, a neighbor and a mentor the past 8 years. His support and friendship has meant great things for my family and me. Although I never met Coach Fred, his dedication to people lives quite strong in his son, John. Thanks to Fred and Barbara, many outside the basketball community have had the good fortune of experiencing "Coach" through John!!

To the family of Mr. Schaus, I am deeply sorry for your loss. I am a 1975 graduate of Newark HS where I played basketball and baseball. My uncle Bud Mercer played on the 38 state championship team and speaks very highly of Fred. It is amazing to me that one man accomplished so much in his life. I am honored to say I am from Newark High School where Fred Schaus went to high school. May God Bless each and every one of you.Sincerely yours, Tim Mercer

I never met Coach Schaus, but he visited me by way of a transistor radio may times when I was a teenager growing near the great City of Morgantown. Listening to interviews with him, Jerry West, Rod Hundley, Ronnie Retton, Bucky Bolyard, and other great players from West Virginia will always be a fond memory of mine. None the least were the great games from the old Field House where the fans were loud and the games so exciting. May God Bless the family.

Coach Schaus passed briefly, but significantly through my life as a senior at Purdue in 1974-75 when I served as the first female sports editor of the Exponent student newspaper. Coach Schaus was a gracious, encouraging mentor. My fondest memory was when he granted me a personal interview following the NIT championship after he learned that I had been barred from the press conference at Madison Square Gardens because I was female (although fully credentialed). I have attached a photo of that moment. I have remembered Coach fondly through the years, and shared stories with my own children. He will be sadly missed.

To Mrs. Schaus and Jim and the rest of the family: I am saddened to read about the passing of Coach Schaus. Even though my Purdue career would be seen by most every observer as a failure, I have fond memories of getting to know you - particularly sharing Sunday brunches with you in your home in the early years at Purdue. May God bless you with happy memories of a life well spent. Mike Needham
