Frederick Jackson Brothers, Major, US Army Retired, age 81, of Rome, Georgia passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on December 14, 1927, to the late Alvin and Edna Pearl (Rogers) Brothers. While growing up in Morgantown, Jack carried the Dominion Post Newspaper and was a member of the civil air patrol. Upon graduating from Morgantown High in 1946, he enlisted in the Army and served two years in Japan. Returning home in 1948, he enrolled at WVU and joined the R.O.T.C. In May of 1951, he married Betty Jean Crawford. They had two daughters, Deborah and Carolyn. Upon graduating from WVU, Jack was called to active duty. During his military career, he served overseas in Korea, Japan, Germany, and two tours in Vietnam, as well as stateside assignments. While in the Army, he received the following decorations: Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Star Medals, Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnamese Honor Medal. After retiring from the Army in 1970, Jack and Betty returned to Morgantown where he went to work for the Monongalia County Health Department as assistant to the Administrator. During this time, he was active in the Kiwanis Club and the Veterans Task Force. In 1982, he and Betty moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where worked as a purchasing agent for Bald Head Island Corporation until 1992. In 2005, he and Betty moved to Rome, Georgia.He is survived by his wife, Betty daughters, Deborah OâSteen and husband, Steve, and Carolyn Coleman and husband, Charles four grandchildren, Stephen and Christopher OâSteen, Brian Coleman and wife, Elizabeth, and Crystal (Coleman) Stowe and husband, Chris one great granddaughter, Anna Stowe.He was preceded in death by his brother, Monroe Alvin Brothers and sister, Evelyn Pearl Ames.A family memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 11:30am, at Nicholson Chapel Cemetery.
