Obituary of Lillian Dove Spurgeon

Lillian D. Spurgeon, 91 of Hurley, WI, former long time Morgantown resident, died Friday March 29, 2013 after a long illness. She was born Lillian Dove Tenney on Jan. 2, 1922 in Queens WV to the late Arthur and Vergie Dove Gooden Tenney. Lillian is a 1940 graduate of Morgantown High School and was employed by Sidler's Dept Store in Morgantown for over 40 years until the stored closed in 1983. She was married to Arnold "Smokey" Spurgeon for almost 53 years until his death on March 21, 1994. They raised three children in Morgantown and have five grandchildren and one great grandson. Lillian was a member of Sabra Methodist Church in Jerome Park and was a volunteer for many years in their various community activities. She was also quite proud of her work supporting area hospitals by making hundreds of personal pillows for surgery patients over the years. Lillian is survived by her children, Rebecca Schwartz of Ironwood MI, Joseph ( wife Maureen) of Palm City, FL and Robert of Downers Groove, IL; her loving grandchildren Heather Schwartz of Michigan, Adam and Bruce ( wife Stephanie) Schwartz of Florida, Christopher and Bryan Spurgeon of Florida and great grandson Gabriel Schwartz (Michigan). In addition, she is survived by her brother, Brady Tenney of Phoenix, AZ and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her step mother, Emma Tenney of Buckhannon WV, two brothers, Duke of Keyser, WV and Coolidge of Cleveland, OH; her sister, Juanita "Wete" Wingfield of Tallmansville; two sisters, Hazel Opal and Stacy Pearl who died as infants, and her son-in-law, Ron Schwartz of Bessemer, MI. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Saturday, April 6 from 11 AM until the 1 PM funeral service. Private interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens. The family requests that an offering to a charity of their choosing be considered in lieu of flowers. They would further like to thank Lillian's Sabraton neighbors, especially Pat and Linda Jones, the staffs of Visiting Homemaker Services of Morgantown, Westgate Assisted Living Facility and Grandview Hospital of Ironwood MI, Villa Maria Nursing Center of Hurley, WI and Lakeside Memorial Chapel of Wakefield MI for all their assistance over the past few years.
