Sophia Edith Obuch Lakatos, 92, formerly of Westover, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born in Marianna, PA on September 16, 1920, a daughter of the late Steven and Victoria (Planka) Obuch. Survivors include two children, Julia Marsh and husband Bill of Westover, and Butch Lakatos and wife Hilda of Morgantown; grandchildren, Vicki Marsh of Aspen, CO, Tammy Sanders and husband Marty of Morgantown, and Heather Lakatos of Morgantown; great-granddaughter, Jessica Sanders; great-grandson, Matthew Sanders, great-great-granddaughter, Aubryana; sister, Eva Momeyer and great-great-grand dog, Griff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Basorika, and her siblings, Ann Fisher, Mary Coulter, Helen Tomovcsik, John Obuch, James Obuch, Michael Obuch and Samuel Obuch. Sophia retired from Monongalia County Board of Education as a Custodian in 1985. She was an avid WVU football and basketball fan, and was a faithful financial supporter of veteran's organizations over the years. One of her proudest achievements was having a poem she wrote about her mother published in a book called "On the Wings of Poetry" at the age of 83. She was a very feisty, active, independent and young 92 year old who simply refused to give in to any illnesses or setbacks she may have had. She had an extensive collection of angels, a great sense of humor, loved playing poker, and working word puzzles She looked forward to her weekly "gab session" with the girls at her favorite hair salon. She never met a stranger, always looked at the positive side of life, was always ready with a smile and gave guidance to anyone who wanted it. She dearly loved her family and will be missed tremendously by all who knew her. Sophia's life will be celebrated by her family at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown on Tuesday, April 9th from 6-8 PM and on Wednesday, April 10th from 12:30 PM until the time of the funeral service at 1:30 PM with Pastor John Russell officiating. Interment will follow in the East Oak Grove Cemetery. The family would like to acknowledge Betty Jo Webber for her care.
