Obituary of Alice Jane Morris Compton

Alice Jane Morris Compton, 88, a resident of Mapleshire Nursing Home for the past 6 ½ years and formerly of Grafton, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born October 6, 1924 in Grafton, a daughter of the late Ira Lester Morris, and the late Settie E. McCauley Morris.
Survivors include two children, Joyce Compton of Morgantown and Blaine Compton of Bristol, TN; two granddaughters, Shelby Montoya of Martinsburg and Kristie Spencer of Morgantown; nine great-grandchildren, Erica Montoya Rockwell and her husband Brian, Anjelica (Jo) Montoya, Alicia Montoya, Tiffany Snider, Kimberly Spencer, Daniel O. Spencer, Daniel Ray Spencer, Jr., Alyssa Kelley and April Spencer; two great-great-grandchildren, Meya Rockwell and Josh; and one sister, Mary Lemmon of Morgantown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Roger Compton, and one son, Roger Compton.
Alice was a graduate of Grafton High School at the age of 16, and also graduated from Morgantown Business College. She was very proud to be a highly accurate transcriptionist of 120 words per minute.
She was a legal secretary most of her life, having worked for the Prosecuting Attorney in Taylor County and various other law firms.
Alice was a member of the Grafton Business and Professional Women's Club since 1967, where she held all offices on the local level and received the state award as Outstanding Club President. She also held almost all of its committee chairmanships, and served on the state level as the Corresponding Secretary, Legislation Chairman and Project Chairman. She was the Secretary of the Taylor County Bicentennial Committee from 1975-1976, and the Secretary of the International Mother's Day Shrine Committee for many years.
She was a life long member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Grafton where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years, and held a perfect attendance record of more than 29 years there.
Alice was a very strong Christian woman. She was an optimist who always looked for the good in everyone. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown from 4-8 PM on Tuesday, June 18th and again on Wednesday, June 19th from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Pastor Ron Ford officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Grafton.
