Edna Muntzing King, age 101, passed away peacefully at her home on June 23, 2013. She was born on November 3, 1911 at Scherr, WV in Grant County. On November 6, 1911 an article was printed in the Grant County Press that announced her birth. The article stated that "five stalwart brothers could not claim a sister until the stork dropped the little maiden." She was the last surviving family member of her generation. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Muntzing and Ada (Cosner) Muntzing, five brothers and two sisters. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William E. King, MD, a son, Dewey King and an infant grandson, David King. Edna graduated from St. John's Academy in Petersburg in 1930 and received her teacher's degree in 1932 from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV. She was a well-known school teacher in Grant County for several years prior to her marriage. Although Edna lived in Morgantown, she enjoyed her home and farm in Maysville, WV. She will be remembered for her hats and a great sense of humor. In 1963, she was honored as the Volunteer of the Year by the Morgantown chapter of the American Cancer Society. She remained active and enjoyed different hobbies and interests. She was a long time member of the Wednesday Bible Study Group, the Neighborhood Book Club and lifetime member of the Mon General Hospital Auxiliary. She maintained a robust interest in politics, and was inducted into the West Virginia Voters Hall of Fame in 2009. Edna was a devoted Christian. For many years, Edna was a member of Wesley Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for several years. More recently, she attended Calvary Baptist Church. Edna is survived by her four children, Roger E. King, MD, and wife Debby of Morgantown; Carolyn Ryan and husband Bill Ryan of Morgantown; Jeanne Wooten and husband Dr. Philip Wooten of Martinsburg; and William E. King II and his wife Susan of Buckhannon. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Elizabeth King of Richmond, VA; Joshua King of Long Beach, CA and his children Jaiden and Madison; Dr. Christopher Ryan and wife Beth and their sons Ezekiel and Isaac of Charleston; Robert Ryan of Charleston; Thomas Ryan and wife Kim and their triplets: Allison, Hunter and Jacob of Charleston; Jennifer King (twin to infant David King) of Buckhannon; and William King of Buckhannon. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Edna enjoyed the frequent company of nieces Ada Kay Bean Cleaver and Linda King McDaniel. Edna enjoyed weekly calls from her nephew Bill Muntzing and discussing politics with her nephew William Bean. The family would like to recognize Dee Ratcliff, Edna's caregiver and the services of Right at Home. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, June 29. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Maysville Cemetery, in Maysville, WV with Pastor Doug Struthers from Calvary Baptist Church officiating.
