Please share a memory of Frances to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Anne (Frances Anne) Dolan, 91,She received many awards for her work, died November 5 at Evergreen Assisted Lining after an extended illness. She was born on May 3, 1922 in Bismarck, ND. The family moved to Minneapolis Minnesota, where she attended high school and the University of Minnesota. She enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1943 and served until her honorable discharge in 1943. She received a Doctorate in Education at Northwestern University in 1953.After graduation she joined the administrative staff at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She accepted a position at the University of San Francisco (USF) becoming Dean of Students in 1964. Anne was the first woman Dean in the entire Jesuit higher education system that was all male, until 1948. Later she was named Vice President of Student Affairs. Anne did not recognize a "glass ceiling" or if she did ignored it. Her duties with students were carried out in an exceptional fashion, particularly women students, shepherding them through a system under change. She received many awards for this work. If you knew Anne, sports and travel formed a huge part of her life. When Title nine became law, mandating women's sport programs in all Federally funded Colleges and Universities, Anne not only was ready, but embraced it wholeheartedly. Single handedly she organized all the women's sports programs available at USF. For her work instituting those programs, she was inducted into the USF Sport's Hall of Fame in 2001, joining among others, a world famous College and Pro basketball player, Bill Russell. After retirement she moved to Tucson Arizona and the sports teams at the University of Arizona, were the beneficiary of her enthusiasm. She was an avid volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital and helped fund the Hospital Chapel. . Numerous other charities were the benefactor of her generosity. Well into her 80's she was playing golf 3 times a week. Anne on two occasions shot a hole in one, a feat she never let her family forget. Anne's other passion was travel. She traveled north to the Artic Circle and south to the Antarctic and included Norway, New Zealand, and Russia among other destinations. She moved to Morgantown in 2008 to be closer to her sister because of Alzheimer's dementia. Although it robbed her of her physical and mental faculties, she bore this with uncommon grace. When asked how she was doing her answer was always, "Fine." When asked what we could get for her, her answer was, Nothing." But she did have one desire, easy to fulfill, eating M&M's. In honoring Anne's wishes, she has been cremated. Family and friends may call at St. John University Parish, University Ave., Morgantown on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 10 AM until the celebration of the Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. with Father Jeremiah Lange, O.S.B. as celebrant.
