Obituary of Travis James Cupp
Please share a memory of Travis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Travis James Cupp passed away at his home the morning of Saturday, December 7, 2013 with his daughter by his side. Travis will be dearly missed by his family and friends but will be welcomed into heaven as he is reunited with his wife and loved ones.
Travis was born in the tiny town of Earth, Texas on April 25, 1932. He was the youngest of 5 children born to Loyd and Ethel McCarty Cupp.
The first 12 years of his life were spent helping with his family's cotton farm in Earth. After growing up and surviving the "dust bowl" in West Texas, Travis and his family moved to Lubbock, Texas where he lived until he enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War.
During the war Travis was stationed at Treasure Island and finished his service in Pearl Harbor, HI as Personal Assistant to the Admiral.
Upon returning home to Lubbock after the war, Travis attended Texas Tech University where he graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and Advertising in 1960. He settled in New York City as an advertising executive with a Madison Avenue advertising agency where he met his wife of 46 years, Florence Caroline Davis Cupp.
Travis and Florence settled in the suburbs of New York City on Long Island where they raised one daughter, Karen Ruth Cupp Higgins. Travis and Florence retired to West Virginia in 1994 to be with their daughter Karen, son-in-law Stephen, and their grandchildren.
Travis had many friendships he held dear that he developed through his years as a volunteer at Monongalia General Hospital and his church. He was an active member of Spruce Street United Methodist Church where he was involved in the McDowell Mission trips and held the office of Treasurer of the United Methodist Men for many years.
Even though he would deny it, Travis was an incredibly talented crafter, woodworker and quilter. Throughout his life he designed and constructed many wood projects for the home and sewed clothing for his family including his wife's clothes and daughter's prom dress and cheerleading uniforms. Amazingly, within the last year of his life he designed and completed three incredibly detailed quilts for his granddaughter, grandson and daughter that will be cherished forever.
Travis is survived by his daughter Karen Ruth Cupp Higgins, son-in-law Stephen G. Higgins, grandchildren, Heather Lynne Higgins Batten (and husband Jeremy Batten), Christian Tyler Higgins, and Josiah James Higgins, and great-grandson Theo Edward Batten.
In honoring his wishes, Travis has been cremated.
Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of his life at Spruce St. United Methodist Church, 386 Spruce St., Morgantown on Sunday, December 15th from 5:30 PM until the time of the Memorial Service at 7:00 with Rev. Dr. Timothy J. Allen officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Spruce Street United Methodist Youth or Choir, 386 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505 are appreciated.
