I will always remember Gerald for the smile that he had and his gracious spirit. He always asked me how I was doing with sincerity when I lived in Stalnaker Hall and whenever I saw him elsewhere. Your kindness will surely be missed, Gerald.

Gerald always remembered my name. He probably knew thousands of students in my time at WVU. But, even after 4 years, he's always call me by my name and say hello. Gerald was one of those people that made everyone feel at home, and that their time genuinely mattered to him. I'm really proud to have known Gerald, and blessed to have had him a part of my time at WVU.
Montani Semper Liberi, Gerald.

Dear Lewis family,
I was so, so sad to hear about Gerald's passing. He was a wonderful man, and I remember him well, and fondly. He was in my mother's art classes at Morgantown Junior High; she loved to reminisced about her favorite students, and Gerald's name came up often. She remembered him as kind, honest and generous-spirited, and I remember him the same way. I hope you find consolation in the memories of his life, and many the people he touched with his wonderful spirit.
With deep sympathy,
Susan Tomasky

God gained an Angel.....my husband and I both knew him...Leo worked with him at Boparc (especially the roller rink) and I remember going to baseball and basketball games in the 80s to watch him ref when my brother played. Since Gerald walked everywhere, when my brother and I were little and in the car with my parents, we would always say "look, there's Gerald", they would beep and he would look up as we were waving to him and he would wave back and give a huge smile. In recent years, I would see him regularly at Giant Eagle and always stop by and chat. My goodness, I will miss you Gerald. See you in Heaven....

Whether umpiring games with Gerald at First Ward Ball Park in the seventies or seeing him over town from time to time in the eighties or more recently at Giant Eagle. Gerald was the same person. Always a smile and a handshake and never an unkind word about anyone. Gerald was the best.

I wanted you all to know how very sad I am to hear of Gerald's passing. He will be missed. His nearly inexhaustible, infectious smile and quick wit served him well for all of his years playing for our softball team, Honest Abe's Used Cars, and in all of the officiating that he did, particularly when it came to the children.
I greatly enjoyed playing softball with him and my son always brightened up greatly whenever he saw or heard Gerald because he had been around Gerald both at our games and while my son played football in the youth league. He enthusiastically engaged Gerald in conversation and that comes from him knowing deep inside how genuine Gerald was when it came to children.
We will miss him. I cannot attend the funeral but I will have my church, Jones United Methodist Church, to pray for him and for all of you as well.

My dear friend,
We have known each other and worked together many, many years. It was always nice to see your friendly face and to give you a ride once in a while. I count myself lucky to have known you and learned much of my own compassion for people through you. We have lost a shining star in you Gerald but you are in a much better place for it.....

He was a gift that left us to soon. I wish I had known him longer than I did. I feel privileged and honored to have known him.
