As I begin the new year, I can't believe Joe is gone. We both worked at Pratt and Whitney. Later, I started BrickKicker Inspections and Joe, asking me of my success, also left Pratt and Whitney and started National Property Inspections. He was indeed a man of many talents and loved nothing more than hanging out with friends, shooting off fireworks in Bruceton Mills and selling his finely crafted woodwork at the Buckwheat Festival. Many good times did I have with Joe and I consider him a good friend. All that knew him feels a loss and as he would often say to me "catch you later Daddy O'".

I was vey sad to hear last weekend that Joe had passed away. We grew up and went to school all twelve years together. We were boyfriend and girlfriend in first and second grades. We were always friends. I am sorry that I didn't know he passed. My condolences to your family and especially Connie.f

I first met Joe when I was a 15 year-old kid sneaking into a bar in Margate, NJ called Meals. Joe was absolutely riveting to watch on stage. He was a killer drummer, a great vocalist, and his on-stage patter was just hilarous. When Joe Hartman was on stage, people played attention. And they paid attention when he was off-stage, too, because Joe was witty whip smarts and charming as hell. Women fell in love with him and men wanted to be like him...I know I sure did! How was also very wise and spiritual. Whenever he talked, I listened, because Joe always knew what he was talking about, often to the most minute or arcane of detail because that's the kind of person Joe was: he paid close attention, and delighted in the details because he knew how much they mattered. Joe Hartman was one of my heros...and he was also a friend. This is sad news indeed, and my heart goes out to his family...especially his son, whom I met several times when he was just a little boy. Rest in peace, brother.

No one could make me laugh by telling a bad joke, no one except for Joe Hartman. I spent many night working with Joe as the fill in sound engineer for Mike's Towing Band and the East Coast Aces, both enjoying and appreciating the passion and craftsmanship that Joe brought to his musical endeavors.
I don't remember Joe as either doing or accepting anything "half ass", as he held himself and others to the same high standards, whether the endeavor was musical, mechanical, or pyrotechnic.
Joe's sharp mind, inquisitive nature, easy smile, and wicked sense of humor were ever present feature of the some the best times of life.
I regret that my only regular connection to Joe and Erin, over the last 20 years, has been through the annual Christmas letter.
Rest in peace amigo, and condolences to Erin, Michael and family.

I just found out 10 minutes ago my soul brother Joe just died. We just talked Friday night laughing our butts off talking about everything. We shared making music together for three years with Elderberry Jak. He was one of the best drummers I've ever worked with ever on top of being one of my best friends. Man I'm gonna miss him. Even though I live in NJ we would talk every couple of weeks like the years and miles weren't there. Gonna miss ya Joe. You were one of a kind and I'm proud to call you a friend. Joec

Erin and Family, It is with a heavy heart that I send this condolence to you. I was truly stunned to hear about Joe's passing. The memories of being in the band Hit and Run together back in 1976-77 have often brought joy to my heart. I listen to the old recordings of the band and never fail to point out to my friends the energy and enthusiasm Joe brought to the band with his awesome drumming. As we have all put on many years since those fantastic days I have been hoping for opportunities to do some hang out time with some of the guys. I have plans to visit Clarksburg in August and was hoping to look you and Joe up during that trip. It's sad to know that opportunity will never happen. Be blessed as many support you and your family in prayer and love.

I met Joe in the early 70s when he was the drummer for Elderberry Jak. He was a one of a kind, truly unique and talented guy. Every fall we met for Mexican food and of course Beer, and to tell stories about the life of a rock star. I'm glad he made to trip to Tybee Island, Ga. to spend a few hours hanging out. who knew that was the last time we'd see each other. Erin, our thoughts are with you and your family. Joe was a legend .

My deepest sympathies to you and your family for the loss of Joe. I was one of the three founders of The Mike's Towing Band from Margate,NJ., so for several years in the late 70's Joe was a close friend, a musical partner, and a "roomie" at both the shore and Pocono gigs. The memories I have of Joe and his awesome drumming skills and onstage entertainment personality will always remain vivid and profoundly great. Offstage, he was quite the character, as well. I can still taste the home brew beers & wines he would make and keep (fermenting a little more each day) in our closets, basements, and anywhere else he could find some hiding space. Trust me when I say that The Mike's Towing Band's 3 year tour of duty (or, reign of terror, as some might say) in the Northeast was "a hoot" for me, predominantly because of the levity and humor that Joe forced into our daily agenda. I feel bad that after the MTB relocated to Florida and Joe returned to his full time life in Morgantown, I wasn't able to keep the communication active (no internet back then). When I saw a picture of Joe about 10 years ago with short hair, I almost fainted. Again, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Ed "Fast Eddie" Preman

Even though we all ended up 1000's of miles apart, Joe was somebody you never forgot. He had so many interests, so many "careers" -- how many people go from rock musician to computer programmer! And that was only the first half of his journey. Always full of quiet [and not so quiet] energy, ready to help anybody with anything, skilled in everything, restless, curious -- a man who lived many lives while here.
