I regret I only today learned of Steve's passing. He was always a good friend and my Big Brother in Sigma Chi Fraternity. I had communicated over the last year with Steve and our discussions were always on business but our friendship was always present. He was a friend to many and all who knew him could easily feel his warmth and personal engagement. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many who had the opportunity to know him.

I was so very sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I first met Steve in the early 80's when a friend and I were founding the Chicago Area Alumni Association. He came up, along with a couple other staff members, to help us with the initial dinner. Although I had only seen him a few other times over the years, I considered him a friend. He will be missed.

As a Mountaineer alumni and fan and having married into a Mountaineer family of WVU grads, I (we) wish to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Stephen Douglas. We attended many WVU alumni functions at which Steve was the first to arrive and the last to leave. He did his job with such class and expertise and represented the university with greatness.
We pray for his family and know that Heaven is filled with the songs of Country Roads and other Mountaineer classics.
Love and prayers to all.
Deb, George, Marge, and Dr. George Solan (Boots) who will be buried on Saturday, May 28, 2016 in his beloved state of West Virginia.

Though I know that this is a difficult time for you, my hope is that you will be comforted from God's inspired word the Bible. John 5:28,29 and Revelation 21: 3,4 gives hope of a future resurrection and the complete elimination of death, pain and mourning. Under Jesus' kingdom rule we have this and much more to look forward to. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Steve and I overlapped at WVU - my 'time'; '79 to '06 (my 'EE' - elect engrng faculty tenure) and his '82 to my leaving EE / CPE Dep't Chair position in 1990. 'We' (Dep't) held a number of functions in 'his' building: the Alumni Center. Steve was always helpful to department staff and me in scheduling and 'seeing through' .. our events. Plus, in the 1980's - it was not as easy as hopefully it may be today - to 'track down' alumni and get in contact with them and their organizations and staff. Our department initiated its Academy of Distinguished Alumni - in October, 1989 - now in its 27th year. Steve was instrumental in assisting us in 'discovering' .. 'our own' .. alumni .. and hosting the inaugural ECE Academy Event in, as usual, in the Alumni Center (again, 'his house').
In addition, Steve and his family were regular Wesley UMChurch attendees and involved in many events and activities at Wesley. Fond memories of him and his family via Wesley, too.
After reviewing all the 'WV' and 'WVU' Awards bestowed upon Steve, it seems to me he was most sincerely deserving .. of them ALL: a truly dedicated Mountaineer, for sure.

We knew Steve through the Alumni Profession as we were all members of CAAE for Alumni Directors. Steve was always a gentleman, made everyone feel special and never sought attention for himself. He served others with his quiet leadership style and delighted in the successes of others. Families treasure loved ones and hold them in their hearts. As friends of Steve we will remember his smile, his laugh and his warm friendship. He touched our lives and will be missed. He and the family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Frank and I were saddened to hear of Steve's passing, we both remember him as a wonderful, caring, and devoted person. When Frank worked at the Alumni Steve was a great person to work for, always remembering to ask after me and our children. When we stopped by last July with our granddaughters he made time to see us even though we had been gone for 4 years. Steve was a great person and it was a privilege to know him. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and all of the Mountaineer nation because we have lost a most beloved Mountaineer.

I fondly remember Steve from RW High School. He was funny guy who loved RW sports teams. When he started dating Sandra, we would tease him about dating a younger woman! Our friendship continued at WVU.
My husband, Dick, knew Steve as well.
We send our deepest sympathy to Sandra, Ashley, and Clark.

I only met Mr. Douglas once, but for all Stephens meeting someone who spells the name properly is always memorable. As a longtime student at WVU, I'll be forever grateful for all the good work Mr. Douglas did in service to our university. He was a staunch supporter of student leaders, the general student body, and our university alumni community.

A true Mountaineer. I meet Steve in the Sports Information Office in the mid 70's. No matter where I was and where I saw him, New Orleans or Washington he always knew me and made an effort to make sure we talked. He converted everyone that came in contact with him into a true Mountaineer, no matter where you came from you left a Mountaineer for life.
To the family, my wife Chris and myself send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to you. You all know that today there are some converted Mountaineers in heaven

Steve was a remarkable man. when I was a kid growing up in Nutter Fort, Steve and Sandra were leaders over the Methodist Youth Fellowship at the church where my dad was minister. They were such a great couple, and as a mixed up teenager Steve was someone I admired so much. He was always so kind and always cared about us crazy kids. He and Sandra were an amazing couple that served as an example to us of how a Christian marriage works. I know my dad really lived him, and Steve always seemed to be actively involved in what was going on at the church. Although my memories of Steve are from decades ago, he obviously continued to be an amazing leader and positive example in his work with WVU alumni, and when I would occasionally run into over the years he was always that same friendly, kind, and positive man that I admired as a kid. Steve and Sandra were a huge positive influence on me, and I know I am just one of very many who can say the same thing. This world was a better place because of Steve Douglas, and he will be remembered by me with tremendous gratitude and respect.

Steve was a true friend. I'm not an alumni but I'm a life member just because of Steve. I had the privilege to invite him in my home 2 yrs ago to tour my mountaineer room. No matter who he was with he always had time to recognize me. Every time I made a donation he always sent me a personal note of thanks. He was the most loyal mountaineer I've ever known. Thanks Steve for being a true friend

My sincere condolences to the Douglas family. We have not only lost one who embodied the true WVU Mountaineer spirit but a dear, dear friend. Thankfully, my father, Gus Comuntzis, introduced me to Steve many years ago. There are so many accolades and words of praise but it was my good fortune to have had that meeting. Steve served his alma mater and was a stellar ambassador for our state no matter where he travelled. I am forever grateful to him for his service and friendship. His presence will be missed by so many of us forever. "Country Roads" most certainly was playing as he entered those heavenly gates.
Love and deep gratitude,

Steve touched the lives of so many people. There never was a better Mountaineer, ever. His love for alma mater was unmatched, as was his pride in West Virginia, and in his family. I am blessed to have been among his countless friends. He will be missed by many, from all walks of life.
Sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family, his fellow Alumni Association associates, who he obviously treated like family, and to others who will miss him greatly. I will never pass the Alumni Center without thinking of him, and that will bring back many fond memories from knowing him over the years.

I remember Steve from my childhood. He lived across the street from my Grandma Gins store in Nutterfort, Gin's Pick-Up. My grandmother was friends with Steve and the Douglas family. I also remember his grandmother that I always thought was a beautiful & elegant lady. Last year I was going thru an old box of my grandmother's things, I found Steve's birth announcement that my grand mother had saved. She was proud of Steve & his accomplisments. I sent Steve a message in Facebook to get his address & mailed it to him. He was thankful & expressed his appreciation & admiration for her. He was a true mountaineer, proud of our little town of Nutterfort & his high school alma mater Roosevelt Wilson. He represented WVU & our state well. May he rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers to his family.
On behalf of the Stewart family,
Brenda
