Harley G. Hershman, 78, of Morgantown, died Friday, May 27, 2016 at Mon General Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born August 6, 1937 in Royal Oak Township, Michigan, a son of the late Thelma V. Hershman and the late Orval R. Hershman.
Harley was a prominent businessman in Morgantown and the surrounding areas. He owned and operated Hershman’s Painting for over thirty five years, and was well known for his excellent work. He retired and closed his successful contracting business in 1999.
He was a member of Suncrest United Methodist Church (Drummond Chapel Campus) for over 60 years. He was received into full membership on October 31, 1954. He served as a Church Trustee as well as serving on the Administrative Board, the Parsonage Committee, and the Ushering Committee.
After serving eight years in the Army of the United States, he was Honorably Discharged. During his tour of duty in the Army, he was recognized for his excellent conduct and attitude and his outstanding cooperation.
He was a member of the Monongalia Lodge #10, Independent Order of the Odd Fellows for 57 years. He was also a member of the West Virginia Coalition on Small Business and the Design Committee Main Street Morgantown.
When not working, Harley enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, Garrett and Cohen. Harley also enjoyed NASCAR racing and attended several races.
He is survived by his son and spouse, Gary Matthew and Kristie Teets Hershman; two grandsons, Garrett Matthew Hershman and Cohen Joseph Hershman, all of Morgantown; a sister and spouse, Carol Jean and Ronald Peterson; a sister, Valerie White and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Johnson Hershman, whom he married on November 21, 1959 and a brother, O. Richard Hershman.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown. Friends and family will be received at the Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 Van Voorhis Rd., Morgantown, on Tuesday, May 31st from 4-8 PM. Visitation will continue in the church on Wednesday, June 1st from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM with Rev. Tim Halloran officiating. Interment will be at Beverly Hills Memorial Garden with full military funeral rite conducted at graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 Van Voorhis Rd., Morgantown, WV 26505.
