I learned today of Dieter and Fritz's death, little more than a month later. I've lived in North Carolina since 2000 but lived and worked all my life in Pittsburgh. I had planned always on one of my trips back to Pittsburg to look them both up but unfortunately never did. I met them both in 1960 at the McKeesport campus of Penn State. We formed a very close group of friends for the two years while there and I roomed with Dieter my senior year at main campus. I lost touch with them after college. I've often thought of the great memories I have and the fun they both were to be around. It seemed all we did then was laugh and kid each other. My warmest condolences to the families of both Dieter and Fritz. May God bless you with his peace in your loss.

To the family: I just read Dieter Schaupp's obituary in the WVU Business and Economics Magazine (January 18, 2017). I apologize that this note is coming so many months after his passing. I was an MBA student in 1976-78 and mainly wanted to say that Dieter (as he asked students to call him back then) was one of the few professors who supported and encouraged the women in the program to excel. I was one of three women in our class and it was a difficult time for us - although, of course, we did very well! He was a wonderful teacher and humanitarian.
My condolences to the family and for your loss of both Dieter and his brother.

Dear Barbara, I am so sorry for your loss. Dieter was absolutely hands down my favorite MBA professor and I learned more from him than anyone and it has influenced my career greatly. I use many of his stories and applications -but one phrase that he told that I use with staff and in my trainings --"be any color but don't be beige". Dieter definitely was not beige. All my best, Malene

Barbara - I was so saddened to hear of Dieter's passing. I will forever remember seeing you, Dieter, Fritz and Becky coming over to my parents house for dinner and drinks, sitting at the top of the stairs after I was to go to bed and listening to all his and his brother's amazing and hysterical adventures and stories. And I enjoyed taking his course as a graduate student in the ILR program. He was a good friend to my parents, an excellent professor and wonderful human being. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to you and the family.

I am so sad and sorry that Dieter is no longer with us, and especially that he is no longer with his beloved family. I valued his support as a colleague and "friend of German," and his concern as a parent, and also very much appreciated his sense of humor.
When Gretchen was speaking at his memorial service, I was reminded of a little conversation that Dieter and I had about a year ago when we were both out walking in South Park. While we were talking, he asked where my daughter, who was then a junior in high school, would be going to college, and I responded that her choice would probably be WVU. With a twinkle in his eye he then told the story of how he convinced Gretchen to attend WVU. She had heard the professors here weren't very good and she wanted to go elsewhere. He said he would investigate. The next day at a luncheon he asked if anyone there was a bad professor. No one raised her/his hand. With his research complete, he told Gretchen that he had learned there were no bad professors at West Virginia University and he thought that would be a very good place for her to go to school. In the end, both she and Adelheid did attend WVU for their undergraduate education and they were both very satisfied. In fact, Dieter said, everyone found it to be quite a good Schnäppchen.

Dietrich was so much to so many people. He was truly one of the best professors I have had the opportunity to learn from--his lessons were forever. One in particular that has never left me and I have passed on many times is that in this world "there are no ugly babies"
Thank you for being a part of my life enjoy the cigars in heaven.

Dieter was a true friend to me and my wife Hanea , we considered him part of our family.
Dieter and I shared views in many areas we were very critical of the global financial system largely controlled by the U.S. And U.S. Foreign policy especially in the Mid-East . He was a true supporter of Palestine and the just cause of the Palestinian people. He will be greatly missed by the Mansour's every where and the people of Palestine. Dieter was throughout The years a generous contributor to the cause of Palestine. His recent generous contribution was last April 23 for the children of Gaza affected by the criminal bombing of their schools by Israel.
May he rest in peace . He will forever be missed .

We are so sorry for your Loss. Dieter will be missed by the Staff and Faculty of the Department of Management. We had some special moments that we shared together as he always worked as a Team Player and he also taught us that everyone needs an Attitude Adjustment Day once in awhile. I just used one the other day.
The memories will help give you peace.

I mourn the passing of a good man. Dieter was one of the first non-finance faculty I met upon arrival to WVU in 1985. We soon found we had common interests in humor and house repair/construction. When I complained about not having a university parking spot and had to park in private lot nearby, Dieter told me the following. "When I worked in Cleveland (I think that was the city), I drove some distance to rail station, rode rail, then walked to bus area, rode bus, and then walked further to campus." Another time he hold how he recommended to visiting businessmen that they go to a particular restaurant that he thought was great, even as he hadn't been there for some years. Only later did he learn that the place had been a gay bar for quite some time. He also told me that his ego in taking on administrative jobs had kept him from building up the real estate empire that he wanted. But I know that in these latter years he got to enjoy more of the real estate business with family members. I am sure that Dieter is in the place where the best people get to go. Howard Leo Brewer

Barbara and family,
To reaffirm what you already know - Dieter changed so many lives. He was the reason I was granted final acceptance to the MSIR program. My GRE scores were not as high as the college would have liked in Math - but Dieter saw something and pushed for my acceptance. I have had a successful career and have been able to provide my family a good life. We give back to the University and we are sure to give back to our community. Although Dieter's name may not be on the gifts - he is certainly key to the fact we are able to give.
The world is short one wonderful man - Heaven has added one big heart.

In 1992 I had the privilege of working for Dieter as a graduate assistant. From our very first meeting I knew he was someone who could not only teach me about the latest leadership, management and labor relations concepts, but could also teach me a few things about life. Over the years I looked forward to my annual visits to Morgantown - especially when the two of us were able to find time to get together over lunch and catch up on each other's lives.
To Dieter's family, I wish to express my deepest condolences for your loss. Thank you for sharing him with so many students over the years so we could all benefit from his knowledge, compassion and wisdom. I will always have a special place in my heart for my greatest teacher - thank you Dr. Schaupp.
Sincerely,
Bill

I remember when Dieter and Fritz came to class at Hillcrest School; I think it was Miss Faddis's room that we were assigned to at the time. Dieter was always happy, friendly and good -natured. He did very well in his life and with his life. He sounded like he was very happy. Life goes to quickly. Rest in peace.

Dieter doing what he loved best. As far as I remember, this was during the visit of WVU's MBA class to Germany in the summer of 2006. This was a team building exercise, in which the team actually built a little house out of pre-fabbed pieces. As you can see, he was right in the middle of the action!

I first met Dieter when I was a graduate student in MSIR and he was a grad assit in my Labor Econ Class( 1969). Some years latter as I became involved with WVU MSIR program I became friends with Dieter and actually was instrumental in hiring Barb into the former Union Carbide. We all will miss him as he was a true professional in all aspects and was respected buy both company and union members as he did superior work in the class room and as a consultant in Labor Relations. He was an impacted many lives of his students and all those he touched. A great instructor and man.He was a mentor to me when , as a second career, I joined the staff at B&E. We are lesser without him.

I worked for Dieter about 25-30 years ago. Together we remodeled the house next door. We built a brick patio, fence and a few other rental things.
When I say we, I mean that in a mentor/student way. His projects always turned into a learning experience. He trusted human nature. And this made the creativity flourish. And this made all the difference.
He was as warm and friendly as you will ever find. Always had a smile, a glint in his eye and a thoughtful comment. Always engaging, always steering conversation towards the “philosophy” of things. He was one of the most interesting people I knew. He and Barbara, the kids, Oma…made me feel like family and were a pleasure to work for.
I worked for him, but he’s the one that gave me the gift. He was a remarkable and unique man and one I will never forget.
