Obituary of Dora Morgan Heflin

Dora Morgan Heflin, 103, of Morgantown, departed this life Monday, May 30, 2016, at her home. She was the last surviving child of Ephriam Stokely Morgan and Edna Wagner Morgan.
The Morgan family came to America from England and the Wagner family from Germany. She was married to Dr. Harry B. Heflin on January 25, 1934. Along with her husband there was a mutual interest in educating youth. Most of her married life was spent on college or university campuses. She was the first lady at both Glenville State College and West Virginia University. She was educated in the public schools of West Virginia, Glenville State College where she graduated with honors, and West Virginia University where she took graduate courses. She began her work as an elementary teacher in 1934.
Dora was a Methodist all her life and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Morgantown. For many years she was an active member of the Methodist Woman's Society. She was a 50 year member of the Woman’s Club of Morgantown, a 50 year member of Monongalia Garden Club, a member of the Elizabeth Ludington Hagan-Colonel John Evans Chapter DAR, life member of Friends of WVU Hospital, life member of Friends of Monongalia General Hospital, life member of the Glenville State College Alumni Association, life member of the WVU Alumni Association, past member of the W.Va. Poetry Society, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Morgantown Rotary Club, a former 4-H club member, a 75 year member of Ellenboro Chapter 20 of the Order of Eastern Star, and a past member of the Morgantown Art Association. She also served for awhile on the advisory board for the YWCA at WVU.
Her special interests were domestic arts, quilting, poetry, arts and crafts, gardening, and flower arranging. She learned quilting from her mother and grandmother. She loved beauty and appreciated the flower garden on Glenville State College campus placed there in her honor for her years of service at the College. The flower garden was dedicated May 20, 2002. She was Dora to her friends and neighbors and special to her family. Her family was dear to her and she gives a special salute to family and friends for bringing her happiness. She enjoyed working with members of community organizations in Morgantown.
Mrs. Heflin is survived by one son, Dr. B. Morgan Heflin. She has two grandsons, Dr. Michael B. Heflin with partner Dr. Stephanie Connon and Dr. Gregory S. Heflin with spouse Gina. She is survived by five great-grandchildren, Alex, Judy, Marisa, Harrison and Malaya Heflin. All are living in the Los Angeles area of California. She also has a number of nephews and nieces- Atty. G. Drew Rolston, Kevin Rolston, Susan Garrett, Randy Riggs, Ramona Thompson, Kenneth Jackson and Charles Jackson. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Dr. Harry B. Heflin, one brother Ralph who died in infancy and two sisters, Helen Scott and Beulah Rolston.
Family and friends will be received at Wesley United Methodist Church, 503 N. High Street, Morgantown on Friday, June 3rd from 11am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Randall Flanagan officiating. Interment will be held Saturday, June 4th at 12:00 (Noon) at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, St. Mary’s, WV. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hastings Funeral Home.
