Ms. Yakim was and always will be one of my favorite teachers. I had her for 4th grade at North Elementary. I always remember her kind heart, vivacious personality, and free spirit. I remember as a 10 year old thinking that her tattoos and multiple earrings were very cool. I used to volunteer to wash the blackboard at the end of the day and I loved hearing about her exotic vacations. She will always be remembered. MHS class of 2003.

I went to high school with Sandy and worked with her as a teacher at North Elementary School. My son, Troy Schifano, had Sandy as his teacher in fourth grade at North Elementary. We knew her well and liked her very much.
Sandy Yakim was Troy's favorite teacher. She was alive with enthusiasm and good to all her students. Troy said once, "Mrs. Yakim yells sometimes, but when she yells, she's right!" Most of his best elementary memories are from being in Sandy's room. She was, and always will be, his favorite.
I had great respect for Sandy because she was an honest, sincere person who did not attempt to be someone she was not. She was a real person who was kind, caring and vivacious. I will always think of Sandy as a friend and my thoughts and prayers are with her loving family right now, especially with her beloved daughter, Erin.

Nancy, Erin - I worked with your dad/grandfather at WAJR for several years and we became very good friends. Sandy worked with us too as she attended school. She was always so jovial and friendly. I am so sorry to hear of your sad loss. I remember so many happy times with Jack, Glenda, and Sandy, as I am sure the family does too.
If there is anything I may be able to do for your or your families, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Peggy Brooks

Sandy was a great friend and classmate. I don't think she ever knew a judgmental moment, and had a singular gift of making people to be at ease in the promise of friendship. Everything about her spoke peace and joy, though our class had more than its share of wartime loss and sorrow. Her father was deservedly and unconditionally proud of the lady she had become. I consider it an honor to have known her, and will miss her. She was a once in a lifetime friend, and a singularly unique lady.

I will remember Sandy as not only my favorite teacher but as the free spirit she was. She was the one who shortened my name to Rose and was a great comfort for me after my grandmothers death. She showed us all how to be ourselves and to accept each other and what compassion was. She gave of herself to us kids and asked for nothing in return. I saw her many times as an adult and enjoyed our hours long talks each time. My only regret would be she retired before our son had her as a teacher. I will miss her deeply.
